Libro Prima edizione Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Very good. Presumed First Edition, First printing. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11.25 inches. xi, [1], 123, [1] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Illustrations. Index. Cover has slight wear and soiling. Inscribed on the half title by the author. Foreword by Kevin Starr. Richard Reinhardt is a journalist and novelist. He is a long-time resident of San Francisco, California, and author of many articles and books on California history, state and local politics, and environmental issues. In 1848, the discovery of gold lured people from all over the world to California. By 1853 most surface gold was mined out, pushing the town of San Francisco into economic decline. A flood of former miners had no jobs, skills, or prospects. The Mechanics' Institute began in 1854, with four books, a chess room, and a mission to start a vocational school. The founders of the Mechanics' Institute of San Francisco held their first meeting on a winter night in 1854. Among the charter members were skilled machinists, carpenters, dealers in building supplies and manufacturers of such basic products as stoves, hand tools, wheels, barrels and wagons. Their common link was a boundless faith in the future of San Francisco as an industrial center. Their mission was to stimulate the growth of industry on the Pacific Coast by igniting the ambitions and honing the practical skills of their fellow mechanics.
