Loew's Grand Theatre, originally DeGive's Grand Opera House, was a theater from 1893-1978 at the corner of Peachtree and Forsyth Streets in downtown Atlanta, Georgia and most famous for the opening of Mitchell's classic. Many epic films premiered at the opulent theatre including Ben Hur, Doctor Zhivago, and Singin' In The Rain. About 300,000 people came out for the premiere on December 15, 1939. The book, itself, is bound in full gray goatskin leather with the scene depicted in various types and colors of leather, cotton floss and tassels. The action in the sky has sterling silver 4mm bezel cups filled with 4mm faceted stones pavilion facing up, including 10 white topaz, 4 red garnets, and 4 orange citrine. The marbled endpapers inside the book are a gray, wine and green pattern. Contained within a matching rounded gray leather spine clamshell box lined with a diamond patterned dark green velvet. The spine has a wine colored leather label stamped in silver with embellishments. Scarlett OÕHaraÕs green hat is depicted at the bottom of the spine. The image displayed across the boards and spine shows Scarlett OÕHara flung across a divan crying after she failed to get money from Rhett Butler. She had gone to great lengths to try to entice Butler, screaming to Mammy, ÒBut IÕve got to have a new dress! Mammy, you donÕt know how we need money. The taxesÓ. Scarlett then hits upon idea using the green velvet curtains to make a new dress. Scarlett is seen wearing the green dress in the image in this striking and beautiful binding.
