Olive cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine; prison bars and chains on the front board. Clean internals; internal hinges are sound and not split. 379 pp 12mo. John Howard's life as laid out in this book was mostly in the late 1700s in the UK where he inherited wealth allowing him to accept positions, one of which was the sheriff Bedfordshire which led him to begin working for better conditions for incarcerated persons. Prison conditions at home and abroad became his life's passion until his death. A clean very presentable copy.
