The inscription is accompanied by a large original drawing, also in blue ink, of a caterpillar (about 12x18cm). Laid in is an article clipping from the March 30, 2025 issue of the New York Times Book Review, highlighting the impact of illustrated children's books, including Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar, in Japan. Illustrated throughout in color, with hole cut-outs, as issued. Color pictorial cloth-covered boards, matching the dust jacket. Color patterned endpapers. Publisher's code A3450 printed on rear board and dust jacket. Faint toning to cloth with some creasing to tail of spine. Small spot on copyright page, which has offset to dedication page, otherwise internally clean. Pages lightly toned. Price-clipped dust jacket with creases from handling and two large closed tears, one to front panel and the other to rear panel. A few additional small closed tears and chips along edges, with a modest sized chip of about 2cm along top edge of front panel. Better than Very Good in a Good to Fair dust jacket. All contents fine, except cardboard bolding box which is Near Fine and lightly worn. According to Eric Carle's former creative director, there were only 100 AP sets specially produced for Eric and his wife to give away to their friends and family, and were not originally intended to be sold. A lavish production of this children's classic in which a caterpillar eats its way toward metamorphosis.
