Libro Prima edizione
Trade paperback. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No DJ issued. xii, [2], 597, [1] pages. Notes. Index. About the Author. Some ink marks noted. Seyed Hossein Mousavian (born 1957 in Kashan) is an Iranian policymaker and scholar who served on Iran's nuclear diplomacy team in negotiations with the EU and International Atomic Energy Agency. He currently resides in the United States, where he is a visiting research scholar at Princeton University. Mousavian played a role in a number of key developments during his more than two decades working on Iranian foreign affairs. He helped to secure the release of two German hostages held by Hezbollah in Lebanon from 1990 to 1993 and American and other Western hostages held in Lebanon in 1998?1999, as well as contributing to the mediation of the largest-ever humanitarian exchange between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah under Germany's auspices (1995?1996). Mousavian also played a role in Iran's cooperation with the US in Afghanistan against Al Qaeda and the Taliban in 2001. From 2003 to 2005, Mousavian was Spokesman of the Iranian nuclear negotiation team, which in 2003 agreed for Iran to provisionally suspend uranium enrichment and allow inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency at its nuclear sites as confidence building measures. In 2004, while head of the negotiating team, Mousavian asserted Iran's sovereign right to pursue nuclear technology for civilian use and expressed satisfaction that the U.S. had been ?isolated? at the IAEA in its attempt to pressure Iran. Seyed Hossein Mousavian provides a rare window into Tehran?s internal deliberations in managing the nuclear crisis that began in 2002 with the revelation of covert nuclear activities in Iran. Mousavian draws on extensive research and intimate knowledge for a better understanding of Iran?s nuclear policy. He served as the head of the Foreign Relations Committee of Iran?s Supreme National Security Council from 1997 to 2005, spokesman for Iran?s nuclear negotiating team with the EU and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) from 2003 to 2005, and an adviser to Iran?s Supreme National Security Council from 2005 to 2007, before being arrested by the Ahmadinejad government and tried for treason. The West?s current options for dealing with Iran?a preemptive military strike, crippling sanctions, espionage and sabotage, or learning to live with an Iranian bomb?all have serious flaws. Only a comprehensive diplomatic solution can resolve the crisis. To reach an agreement, the United States and Iran need to better understand each other?s interests and objectives. This book is an attempt to do precisely that. The first detailed Iranian account of the diplomatic struggle between Iran and the international community, The Iranian Nuclear Crisis: A Memoir opens in 2002, as news of Iran's clandestine uranium enrichment and plutonium production facilities emerge. Seyed Hossein Mousavian, previously the head of the Foreign Relations Committee of Iran's Supreme National Security Council and spokesman for Tehran's nuclear negotiating team, brings the reader into Tehran's private deliberations as its leaders wrestle with internal and external adversaries. Mousavian provides readers with intimate knowledge of Iran's interactions with the International Atomic Energy Agency and global powers. His personal story comes alive as he vividly recounts his arrest and interrogations on charges of espionage. Dramatic episodes of diplomatic missions tell much about the author and the swirling dynamics of Iranian politics and diplomacy, undercurrents that must be understood now more than ever. As intense debate continues over the direction of Iran's nuclear program, Mousavian weighs the likely effects of military strikes, covert action, sanctions, and diplomatic engagement, considering their potential to resolve the nuclear crisis.
