Annie Fields (1834-1915), who compiled this shortly after Fields' death, was widow of this publisher, editor, poet and lecturer (1817-81) and herself an author of some renown. Since a signed copy of this posthumously-published collection is impossible, here's the next best thing: Tipped to front flyleaf is a clipped (4½" X 7/8") letter closing, a hurried "Truly Yours J.T. Fields" and a few partial words above penned in his usual purple ink. The volume closes with a poem written specifically for it by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, "Auf Wiedersehen," which appears here (pp. 274-75) for the first time.
