Hard cover. 1941 first copyright. Black and blue cloth over boards. 190 p; 21 cm. Early 20th century American literature; F Scott Fitzgerald had just been working on the first episode of Chapter 6 in December 1940, when the next day he died suddenly of a heart attack. His manuscript had not reached final draft stage, and margins were filled with revision notes. Edmund Wilson in his Foreword writes that this novel was intended to be as finely wrought as "The Great Gatsby" but required far more background material about Hollywood and its studios than had Gatsby, a different setting and character. Wilson considers this partial work, however, more mature, with the main movie mogul character well-defined, and Fitzgerald's only novel to deal with a singular profession. The unfinished draft is supplemented by notes left behind in outline and snippits of characterization. Very good. No dust jacket. Ex-library. Only library markings: paper pocket and single ink stamp on free end paper. Discard from tiny Olive G Pettis Library in Goshen NH. Clean covers and pages. Near fine.
