Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. Numberland is concerned with the relatively unexplored territory of Lewis Carroll's contributions to mathematics and logic, rather than his contributions to literature. The two sometimes coincided rather brilliantly. Queen Victoria loved his Wonderland, and wrote to the publisher requesting that she be sent the very next book that Carroll produced. Carroll being Dodgson, of course, she was duly sent 'An Elementary Treatise on Determinants'. Wilson relates, "Queen Victoria was not amused." The book is organised into eight "fits" to mimic those of one of Carroll's great works, each focusing on a different area of his life or work. Several of these chapters concentrate on Carroll's puzzles and games, as well as tricky logical gymnastics. The solutions and references to further reading are included in a notes section.

Quarter Cloth. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. First American. New York, NY, W. W. Norton, 2008. First American edition. 8vo. Dark orange quarter cloth over tan boards with gilt lettering embossed on spine, illustrated throughout, 237 pp. Exploring the imagination and mathematical genius of the man who wrote Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, mathematics professor and Lewis Carroll scholar Robin Wilson examines the many inspirations and sources for the fantastical writings of Charles L. Dodgson, mathematical and otherwise. As Wilson demonstrates, Dodgson-who published serious, if occasionally eccentric, works in the fields of geometry, logic, and algebra-made significant contributions to subjects as varied as voting patterns and the design of tennis tournaments, in the process creating imaginative recreational puzzles based on mathematical ideas. The book is filled with photos, diagrams, cartoons, and illustrations from Carroll's work. "British mathematician Wilson paints a charming picture of Charles Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll, in this slender biography. Skipping over the most chronicled aspects of Dodgson's life with only a sharp side note deriding rumors of his pedophilia as bad history and bad psychology, Wilson focuses on Dodgson's mathematical and educational accomplishments: pamphlets and books on Euclid, an efficient way of calculating determinants, astute analysis of election methods, and systems of mnemonics and ciphers. Wilson also includes puzzles (some with unsatisfying solutions); a number of Dodgson's photographs, for which Wilson labels him one of the most important photographers of the 19th century; and humorous and satirical letters suggesting political postulates such as, 'Let it be granted, that a speaker may digress from any one point to any other point.' Though Dodgson was apparently not always a brilliant teacher or writer in his field, Wilson chooses some of his best work for the examples, and any fan of Victorian mind-benders or mid-level mathematics will enjoy the Dodo's witty and eager explanations of logical puzzles and games."-Publishers Weekly New in a new dust jacket, protected by a mylar cover.
