November 2013 in London; gebürtig Doris May Tayler) war eine britische Schriftstellerin. Im Jahr 2007 erhielt sie den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Leben: Der Vater war britischer Kolonialoffizier und die Mutter Krankenschwester. Als Doris Lessing geboren wurde, war ihr Vater bei der Imperial Bank of Persia angestellt. 1925 zog Lessings Familie in die britische Kolonie Südrhodesien (heute Simbabwe), wo sie ein hartes Leben auf dem Land führte. Lessing besuchte eine katholische Klosterschule und die Girls High School in der Hauptstadt Salisbury (dem heutigen Harare). Mit vierzehn Jahren brach sie die Schule ab. Das riesige Stück Land brachte keinen Reichtum, so dass ihre Mutter den Traum, ein viktorianisches Dasein unter den Wilden" zu führen, aufgeben musste. Die Autorin erlebte eine schwierige und unglückliche Kindheit, und die Texte der Autorin über das Leben in den britischen Kolonien Afrikas sind voller Mitgefühl mit dem inhaltsleeren Dasein der britischen Siedler wie auch der trostlosen Lage der einheimischen Bevölkerung. Im Jahr 1939 heiratete sie Frank Charles Wisdom; aus dieser Ehe hat sie zwei Kinder (einen Sohn und eine Tochter). Die Ehe wurde 1943 geschieden, die Kinder blieben beim Vater. In zweiter Ehe heiratete sie 1945 den deutschen Emigranten Gottfried Lessing, mit dem sie einen weiteren Sohn hat (Peter), der nach der Scheidung 1949 bei ihr blieb. Gottfried Lessings Schwester Irene war die Frau von Klaus Gysi und Mutter von Gregor Gysi. Nach ihrer zweiten Scheidung behielt Doris Lessing den deutschen Nachnamen bei. Ihr erster Roman mit dem Titel The Grass is Singing (Afrikanische Tragödie) erschien im Jahr 1949 in London nach ihrer Übersiedlung aus Rhodesien. Lessings literarisches Schaffen wird derzeit in drei Perioden eingeteilt: 1944 bis 1956 das kommunistische Thema, als sie radikale Gedanken über soziale Fragen verarbeitete. 1956 bis 1969 das psychologische Thema danach das Sufismus-Thema (islamische Mystik), das von ihr ausführlich in dem fünfbändigen Science-Fiction-Romanzyklus Canopus im Argos: Archive bearbeitet wurde.
