Hardcover. Condizione: Fine in Dust Jackets. Second Edition, Second Impressions. First British [and first hardcover] printing of the Revised Second Edition, Second impressions. An important edition of the text, being the first publication of the best text published in Tolkien's lifetime; correcting many of the errors in the first printing of the new edition. Three volumes, comprising 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 'The Two Towers' and 'The Return of the King'. Octavo, original red cloth stamped in gold on spine panels, top edges stained red, folding maps at rear of each volume. 423 + 352 + 440 pp. Ink inscription on front free endpaper of FELLOWSHIP and TWO TOWERS, offering the books as a wedding present in 1968, this inscription is also present in RETURN but glued down to the front endpaper is a larger inscription drawn (somewhat crudely) in runes with the note 'see back cover' (referring to the rear endpaper) where there is written "Translation to inscription on inside of front cover - 'Wedding Greetings from Gordon, Shelagh and all the rest at Buckingham Palace' ". Some mild knocking to the corners, faint marks to endpapers from old dust jacket "protectors", small areas of discoloration to the cloth on TWO TOWERS, price corner of dust jackets clipped. A very good, clean set in very nice clean dust jackets with a curious and rather unexpected provenance. A very important edition, and quite scarce. Hammond & Anderson A5.e.i, A5.e.ii, & A5.e.iii. The 'best' edition of the Last Great Classic. When 'The Lord of the Rings' was first published in America in 1955-56, it was before the United States joined the international copyright convention. In 1965 Houghton Mifflin - Tolkien's American publisher - seemed to be in violation of the new copyright laws designed to protect the American printing industry by importing sheets of 'The Lord of the Rings' that were printed in the UK by Allen & Unwin (which were clearly marked 'Printed in Great Britain'). As such, Ace Books - under the direction of Donald Wollheim - determined that 'The Lord of the Rings' had fallen into the public domain and issued their own edition. Tolkien's authorized publishers asked Tolkien to provide new material for 'The Lord of the Rings', to create a new edition which could be copyrighted. The heavily revised text, with additions - including a new Foreword to the first volume & the long-promised Index - was first issued in paperback by Ballantine Books in 1965, and later in hardcover in the UK by Allen & Unwin. By January 1966, all changes to the Ballantine edition, except for the appendices, were transferred to Houghton Mifflin's master set of proofs and sent to Allen & Unwin who were keen to rush out copies of the urgently needed new edition. But Tolkien's original revisions to the appendices were lost, and Allen & Unwin had to reset based on the printed Ballantine Books text. Consequently, there were many errors in the text of the Appendices, and on examination Tolkien also found many errors in the Index and throughout the main text. The first Impression of the new Allen & Unwin hardcover edition came out on 27 October 1966; but Tolkien continued to revise the text until after the first impression had been completed; his final revisions were not incorporated until the second impression of 1967.For a detailed analysis of this and 'The War over Middle Earth', see Hammond & Anderson, 'J.R.R. Tolkien - A Descriptive Bibliography', items A5c (Ace Books paperbacks), A5d (Ballantine Books paperbacks), & A5e (Allen & Unwin Hardcovers). For specifics, see Hammond & Anderson pages 124 to 138, and the notes (including Tolkien's comments on the revisions) on pages 137-138 in particular.

Condizione: Good. 1st edition. Cloth, G. 3 volumes, 423pp, 352pp, 416pp, b/w map of the Shire in volume I, folding map of Middle Earth at the rear of each volume ( detached in volume I ), cloth rubbed with a little loss at the corners, small split in the cloth on the spine of volume I, gilt title lettering, a fair set. Fellowship in a December 1954 2nd impression. Towers is a 1956 4th impression & Return is a November 1955 2nd impression. A classic work of fiction, much imitated but never equalled. The first volume is techincally the first revised edition of the text - the printers had, inexplicably broken up the forms holding the type after the first impression was struck, thus the whole book had to be reset it for this printing. This enabled Tolkien's corrections to the text to be included. 1800 grams.
