In der typischen Manier Morrisons wird eine Geschichte von vielen, ineinander verwobenen Stimmen und Perspektiven erzählt, die Geschichte eines Mannes, Bill Cosey, und sechs Frauen unterschiedlicher Generationen, die alle in der ein oder anderen Weise durch die Liebe zu Bill Cosey mit ihm und wiederum mit den anderen Frauen verbunden sind. Der Mann ist tot, die Frauen leben noch, auch das ist geschickter Schachzug Morrisons, die mitten in die Geschichte eine Leerstelle platziert, um die sich die Geschichten der Frauen ranken, ohne dass man mit Sicherheit weiß, welches nun die wahre Geschichte sei. Zumindest aber erfährt der Leser, dass Cosey einst in den vierziger Jahren ein erfolgreicher Hotelier war, der in einem Badeort an der Ostküste der Vereinigten Staaten das eleganteste Etablissement der Zeit für Farbige führte. In einer Zeit des ungehemmten Rassismus und der rechtlich sanktionierten Rassentrennung bot Bill Cosey schwarzen Amerikanern der Mittel- und Oberschicht eine reale Utopie: einen Raum, in dem auch sie das amerikanische Glücksversprechen ausleben konnten, ohne von der Realität rassistischer Unterdrückung und Ungleichheit belästigt zu werden. Rauschende Bälle und offener Luxus prägten diesen utopischen Ort, der heute jedoch nach dem Niedergang des mondänen Strandbades zugleich nostalgisch und unwirklich erscheint. Alles was blieb, sind verlassene Tanzsäle und verblasste Fassaden -- und Menschen, die den Absprung nicht geschafft haben und sich an die Vergangenheit klammern. Wie in so vielen ihrer Romane verweist Toni Morrison auch in Liebe auf die unauflösbare Verstrickung von individuellem Schicksal und kollektiver Geschichte; das Dilemma des amerikanischen Rassismus ist auch die Geschichte unmöglicher Liebe und destruktiver Leidenschaften und des unaufhaltsamen Verlusts menschlicher Zuneigung und Zusammenhalts.
