Um in die Thematik einzuführen, werde ich zunächst einen kurzen historischen Überblick über die römischen Spiele geben. Dann zeige ich die Gesamtstruktur des liber spectaculorum auf und nenne verschiedene Aspekte von Martials literarischem Vorgehen anhand von sechs ausgewählten Epigrammen. Außerdem beschäftige ich mich mit der Frage, an welchen Adressaten Martial sein Buch richtet und mit welcher Intention er sein Werk geschrieben hat. In diesem Kontext werde ich Hubert Canciks Meinung diskutieren, dass das Buch der Schauspiele '.das Erschreckendste, was antike Literatur hervorgebracht haben dürfte, eine Art KZ-Lyrik' sei.Die römischen SpieleLaut Thomas Wiedemann spielten die Spiele im antiken Rom als Bestandteil der römischen Kultur eine wichtige Rolle im Leben eines Römers. Bereits im 6 Jh. v. Chr. entstand der erste Vorläufer: die ludi. Mit diesem Begriff wurden zeremonielle Prozessionen auf dem Campus Martius bezeichnet, mit denen Wagenrennen und schauspielerische Aktivitäten verbunden waren. Aus diesen sollen sich laut römischen Schriftstellern die traditionellen Schauspiele der römischen Gesellschaft entwickelt haben. Man bezeichnete sie als Staatsangelegenheit, weshalb sie teilweise aus dem aerarium, der Staatskasse des römischen Volkes, finanziert wurden. Die Gladiatorenkämpfe und Tierhetzen kamen in Rom erst später in Verbindung mit den ludi auf. Bis ins 3. Jh. n. Chr. unterschieden die Römer beide Arten der Aufführung mit den Begriffen ludi und munera. Die Ludi publici bezeichneten Wagenrennen und schauspielerische Darstellungen, die auch weiterhin öffentlich finanziell unterstützt wurden und regelmäßig stattfanden. Die Gladiatorenkämpfe (munera) hingegen wurden zu bestimmten Anlässen von einflussreichen Privatpersonen (editores) ausgerichtet und finanziert, so zum Beispiel zu Totenfeiern von verstorbenen Verwandten.
