James Wesley Silver (1907-1988) taught history at the University of Mississippi beginning in 1936 where he earned a reputation as a vocal sympathizer of the plight of the state's African Americans. Silver's controversial book harshly criticized Mississippi's political and racial practices and the author left Ole Miss soon after its publication. Silver joined the history department faculty at Notre Dame from 1964 to 1969 thereafter teaching at the University of South Florida until his retirement in 1979. In a bit of Mississippi trivia, William Faulkner used to watch episodes of "Car 54, Where Are You" and occasionally "Bonanza" too at Professor Silver's house on the Ole Miss campus. {MS Shelf #5}.
