  • 12mo, pp. xvi, 252, 5 folding engraved plates. Contemporary red morocco, spine gilt in compartments with ruled latticework and green morocco label, sides with floriated borders, gilt edges, blue endpapers (joints expertly repaired, spine a little dull). Presentation copy, inscribed at the foot of the title ?Presented to G.P. Ehret from the Author? followed by a signature which has been almost entirely cropped, and in another hand ?Paris, March 6. 1765.? FIRST EDITION. Duhamel du Monceau was inspector general of the French navy. In this book he deals with the diseases of a ship?s crew and the means of preventing them, hygienic conditions on board a ship, and nutritional advice. These include methods of renewing the air below decks, the preparation of an extract of lemons, and the preservation of fresh vegetables. Reference is made to Lind, Sutton, and Hales, whose books had been recently published. At the end is a description of the Hospital St. Louis in Paris, illustrated in plan and elevation on two of the plates. The recipient of this copy was probably George Phillip Ehret, M.D. (1741?1786), a surgeon of Watford, Hertfordshire, and son of the great botanical artist Georg Ehret.
