Ninth American Edition. 12mo, 368pp., illustrated with folding map, frontispiece, and two inset illustrations, as well as one folding chart and several inset charts. A nearly very good copy in an original, unsophisticated state. Contemporary brown calf with red morocco spine label. Darkening and some flecking to the leather along the edges of the boards. Outer joints worn, but gingerly intact. Spine ends worn. Frontispiece with an internal closed tear, seemingly where the printer pushed slightly too hard on the plate when executing the print. Folding chart slightly mis-folded. One internal leaf with a marginal chip, seemingly from being inartfully opened; not approaching any text. Some foxing to the folding map, else a notably un-foxed copy internally. WIth all faults, still an otherwise nice, clean example. "Ninth American Edition," per the title page, a claim that is difficult to fully prove. In any case, one of a number of early reprints of Jefferson's foundational work on Virginia, the only book published entirely during his lifetime. The Appendix contains four parts: an untitled update to his original work with some corrections; a draft of the Virginia Constitution; the Virginia Statue for Religious Freedom; and a suite of documents relating to the murder of the Logan family in Virginia.
