Webster was in the words of Edmund Pearson, `America's classic murder.' This is a good edition of the trial." McDade 1062.

Sabin 102329. McDade 1067. Cohen 13182. John White Webster, born in Boston, Massachusetts, was a professor of chemistry and geology at Harvard Medical College. In 1849-1850, he was involved in the infamous Parkman Webster murder case. Despite supposedly having "confessed" and being hung for the murder, the State Prosecutor of Massachusetts re-researched the case in the late 1960s and early 1970s, including the much-suppressed documents and evidence, and concluded that Dr. Webster was innocent and that the prosecutors railroaded Webster. Even Webster's lawyers had advised Webster to confess so that he would avoid being hung as the verdict was easily predictable. In one of the greatest miscarriages of American justice, the jury was told by the judges, themselves, that they "Must come back with a guilty verdict." See Sullivan, Robert, 1971, The Disappearance of Dr. Parkman, Little, Brown, and Company, Boston, pp. 241. Sullivan(1971) concluded that Dr. Parkman's murderer was Webster's accuser, Ephraim Littlefield. The three judges who tried the case were guilty of gross and criminal re-writing of the court transcripts. The Webster-Parkman Murder trial has been billed as the "Case of the Century" and has been widely cited as one of the earliest uses of forensic evidence to identify a body. Littlefield had partially cremated the remains of Dr. Parkman and dental evidence and bone fragments were used to verify the remains as those of Parkman. See also King, Vandall T., 2006, Mineralogy and Chemistry at Harvard 1800-1865: In Search of John White Webster - an Innocent Man, Journal of the Geoliterary Society, volume 21 (#2): p. 5-24.

Several days later the janitor at the School made a grisly discovery in the furnace under Webster's laboratory!
