Condizione: Good. Pablo Picasso (illustratore). 4to. 404 pp., with over 1200 illustrations. Cloth in dust jacket. 9.125 x 12.25 inches (23 x 31 cm.) The first edition of this catalogue was published in 2004. This new edition adds works that have come to light since 2004,as well as references to subsequent public sales and exhibitions. This new edition has 404 pages, twenty more than the first edition, as wellas eight new color plates.Fifty-five of the new works in this edition originated in two sketchbooks from 1970-1971.The first of these is sometimes referred to as the Birthday Sketchbook, since the first work is dated on the master's 89th birthday, October25, 1970. The last is dated April 26, 1971. The sketchbook contained 27 drawings and was acquired by François Lachenal in Paris. Asubsequent owner consigned the whole sketchbook of Christie's, who sold the individual pages in London on June 23, 2005.The second sketchbook is referred to as the Berggruen Album, since it was acquired by the prominent dealer Heinz Berggruen, whoselegacy is the Berggruen Museum in Berlin. This sketchbook contained 26 drawings and manuscript dates on the two covers. The wholesketchbook was first published as a facsimile by Berggruen's son John, a dealer in San Francisco, in 2004. An exhibition was held at JohnBerggruen's gallery in early 2004 on the occasion the publication of the facsimile. The Berggruen heirs then put the sketchbook up for saleat Sotheby's in London, where the individual pages were sold on February 9, 2005.The main exhibition since 2004 focusing on Picasso's final years was held at the Gagosian Gallery in New York, in the spring of 2009. Thecatalogue and show were entitled Picasso Mosqueteros and included 52 paintings from 1964-1972 and a selection of etchings from the late1960s.The last image in the first edition of this catalogue was dated Feb. 21, 1973. A later image, of a musketeer, is now the last known work byPicasso before his death on April 8, 1973, at age 91. This drawing is dated March 10, 1973 (73-003).

Prima edizione
Condizione: Good. 2nd edition. 9-1/8 x 12-1/4 inches. 23 x 31 cm. Cloth in dust jacket. 304 pages. 666 works described and reproduced. 8 color plates. This second edition of Spanish Civil War is published in January 2013. There are now 304 pages as opposed to 288 pages in the first edition of 1997, with 8 new color plates. There are many corrections, additions and revisions. The military uprising against the socialist Popular Front ?Republican? government in Spain begins in July of 1936. The Republican government makes Picasso the honorary director of the Prado in September, one month before his 55th birthday and just two months before the museum is bombed by the ?Nationalist? Franco forces and evacuated. During the first quarter of the year in Paris, Picasso primarily paints portraits of his lover Marie Thérèse; still-lifes, often with a pitcher; sharp edged morphic studies and portraits of Dora Maar. In April he sketches an artist and model series and a minotaur in a still-life. On April 26, 1937 the German allies of the Nationalists destroy the Basque town of Guernica. Picasso begins working immediately on his own Guernica project that same afternoon, forgoing his typical weekend, spent with Marie Thérèse and their 20-month-old daughter, Maya. During May and early June, Picasso creates 53 studies and paintings for Guernica, culminating in the final version on June 4. During June and July in Paris, Picasso draws and paints a series of weeping women one of which is the woman from Guernica. He spends the summer in Mougins, painting portraits of his female companions, Nusch Eluard and Lee Miller as a surreal L'Arlésienne. There are also distorted images of a woman with a harlot-like grin. During the fall in Paris, Picasso paints two-sided views of his new lover Dora Maar; a series of weeping women; and of Marie Thérèse. By October, all of northern Spain has fallen to the Nationalists. In March, Picasso begins a series of two-sided views of a woman with prominent nostrils and continues these in April and May. During the summer in Mougins, he creates a series of a male with lollipop and ice cream cones. During the fall in Paris, Picasso paints a still-life with a bull and artist's palette, in which the bull seems to be the artist. In January, 1939, there are two-sided profiles of a woman, mainly Marie Thérèse, reclining on her elbow and then reclining full-length. A woman in a chair appears on January 21 and this motif continues through March. The still-life with the pitcher or bull's head reappears. The Spanish Civil War ends on April 1, 1939, with the victory of the Franco Nationalists. Tens of thousands of Republicans flee to France and North Africa. The celebrated painting Night Fishing in Antibes is Picasso's last work before the German invasion of Poland on September 1, 1939 and the beginning of WWII.

Picasso is 82 at the beginning of 1964. He and Jacqueline havenow lived together for 10 years and been married since 1961.They reside in Mougins, in the south of France. Images ofJacqueline continue to figure prominently in Picasso's work.In 1964 he paints portraits of Jacqueline posed seated and as areclining nude, often with a cat. Picasso then draws a series ofpencil sketches alternating between the head of Shakespeare andthat of a monkey. Mid-year he does a series of portraits of men:often bearded, with a cigarette and wearing a striped shirt. In October of 1964, Picasso completes 29 paintings of an artistat an easel. These all take as their starting point his 1963 paintingThe Painter. Picasso then makes paintings of an artist and model. In December, Picasso creates a number of works depicting thehead of a man or a boy.In the early part of 1965, Picasso begins a series with a lobster, usually being attacked by a cat. He also paints the first in a seriesof a youth serenading a nude woman at dawn on the beach titled- L'aubade, and works on a group of views of Mougins. In the earlypart of 1966, Picasso produces only some sketches and in Aprilhe begins a series after Jupiter et Thétis by Ingres. For the balanceof the year, Picasso does caricatures and sketches on themes fromprevious years.During January of 1967, Picasso creates sketches including a musician, watermelon eater, flutist and man holding a lamb. Picassoalso begins ink washes and oil paintings of a musketeer, whichdevelop into a painter who then caresses a model. Between April and June,Picasso designs a number of covers for the book Picasso: Theatre. In June Picasso continues the Serenade at Dawn series.
