Editore: The Book House for Children, Chicago, 1935., 1935
Da: My Dead Aunt's Books, Hyattsville, MD, U.S.A.
Condizione: Good. 247 p., unmarked but not uniformly clean; lavishly illustrated in tonalities of orange and teal; 3 maps of the ancient world; paper only mildly age-toned and very strong, without any tears; binding firm; textured gray boards with paste-on reproduction of Roman "boy with dolphins" painting in color; beautiful black, white, orange and blue end papers with search light over metropolis motif (a bit like the old 20th Century Fox image). This would be "very good" but for smudges on a number of the first 49 pages--perhaps from a former owner whose parents didn't insist on hand washing before reading--the section most soiled is "Rome and the Western World," for about 50 pages. The reader then either lost interest or washed his/her hands after "Rome Conquers Carthage." Clean sections are "The Roman Republic," "The Early Roman Empire," "The Story of Christianity," and "Christianity Conquers the Empire.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Book is in pristine condition. Olive Kennon Beaupr was born in Aurora, IL on September 11, 1883. She received her B. A. From Smith College in 1904 and returned to Aurora to work as an English teacher for two years. Olive and Harry Edward Miller were married October 2, 1907. Olive began writing rhymes and stories to entertain her daughter Virginia, and was encouraged by Harry to publish some of her writings. In 1919 Olive founded The Bookhouse for Children publishing company. The 'picturesque' in the title refers not to quaintness, but to the extraordinary number of carefully chosen and beautifully rendered illustrations (many hundreds per volume) and maps that give this set its unique and unsurpassed value. The captions to the page-by-page illustrations essentially retell the story of the text but in reference to art. I[goodreads] ; Small 8vo 7 " - 8" tall; 512 pages.
