About the book >.>.> This English translation of the course of six lessons (or lectures) which Stravinsky delivered in French at Harvard University has been eagerly awaited and will provoke much comment. The Poetics of Music indeed makes absorbing reading, stimulating even where one disagrees with it. It is well described by Darius Milhaud, who contributes a preface, as 'a searchlight turned by Stravinsky on his own work, on one hand, and on music in general on the other'. Stravinsky's mind ranges widely and acutely, illuminating with praise or criticism the music of such com-posers as Beethoven, Wagner, Weber, Gou-nod, Bellini, Verdi, etc. Among general subjects treated are the Phenomenon of Music, Composition, Style, Performance of Music; and a particular section deals with Russian music both of the past and the present (where Stravinsky speaks of the 'neo-folklorism of the Soviets and of the degrading of musical values'). The Poetics of Music will commend itself to a far wider public than that which is es.
