First edition. Softcover. The simultaneous paperback issue. The only book published during Hujar's AIDS shortened life. Features an introduction by Susan Sontag. An interesting collection in which Hujar juxtaposes images taken in the catacombs in Palermo, Sicily with portraits of his friends and celebrities many of whom would also succumb to AIDS. A very good copy with a sticker removal to the front panel and a sticker from the Visual Studies Workshop to the verso of the rear cover. Otherwise a solid copy of this terrific book.

11 x 10 inches. 40 black-and-white reproductions. Printed wrappers. "I am moved by the purity and delicacy of his intentions. If a free human being can afford to think of nothing less than death, then these momento mori can exorcise morbidity as effectively as they evoke its sweet poetry and its panic" (from the introduction by Susan Sontag, whose renowned portrait by Hujar, showing her supine on a bed, is included in the book). The book is divided into two series: portraits taken between 1975-75, and photos of the Capuchin catacombs of Palermo taken in 1963. They form a provocative resonance. Portraits comprise: John Waters, Robert Wilson, Michèle Collison, Jose Rafael Arango, Edwin Denby, Linda Moses, Bill Elliott, Kenneth King, Peter Hujar (self portrait), Vince Aletti, William S. Burroughs, Charles Ludlam, T. C., James Waring, Ann Wilson, Ray Johnson, Fran Lebowitz, May Wilson, H.M. Koutoukas, Anita Steckel, John Ashbery, Anne Waldman, Lola Pashalinska, Divine, Alan Loyd, Remy Charlip, Larry Rée. A fine copy internally, the wrappers with some very light yellowing and a few stray marks. Essentially a fine, unread copy First edition (issued similtaneously in paperback, as here, and hardcover with jacket).

Cloth. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. The 1976 true 1st edition, in its much more elusive hardback. Tight and Near Fine to Fine, with no writing or markings of any kind internally. And in a crisp, price-intact, VG dustjacket, with a degree of foxing and soiling along the panel edges. Still though, handsome and very presentable but the jacket has taken on some wear along the edges. Quarto, Introduction by Susan Sontag. From Paul Thek to Ray Johnson, from May Wilson to Divine, Hujar's first-rate --and increasingly influential-- black-and-white portraits thruout.

An interesting collection in which Hujar juxtaposes images taken in the catacombs in Palermo, Sicily with portraits of his friends and celebrities many of whom would also succumb to AIDS. A clean near fine copy with some with very faint foxing in a very near fine dust jacket. A nicer than usual copy of the uncommon cloth issue of this powerful monograph.
