Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Press, 1997. 388 pp. Illustr. Fine COPY. Hardcover with dustjacket. She was, Hannah Arendt wrote, ''my closest friend, though she has been dead for some hundred years.'' Born in Berlin in 1771 as the daughter of a Jewish merchant, Rahel Varnhagen would come to host one of the most prominent salons of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Arendt discovered her writings some time in the mid-1920s, and soon began to reimagine Rahel's inner life and write her biography. For this first complete critical edition of the book in any language, Liliane Weissberg reconstructs the notes Arendt planned for Rahel Varnhagen but never fully executed. She reveals the extent to which Arendt wove the biography largely from the words of Rahel and her contemporaries. In her extended introduction, Weissberg reflects on Rahel's writings and on the importance of this text in the development of Arendt's political theory. Weissberg also reveals the hidden story of how Arendt manipulated documents relating to Rahel Varnhagen to claim for herself a university position and reparation payments from the postwar German state.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. A biography of a Jewish woman, a writer who hosted a literary and political salon in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century Germany, written by one of the twentieth century's most prominent intellectuals, Hannah Arendt. Rahel Varnhagen: The Life of a Jewish Woman was Hannah Arendt s first book, largely completed when she went into exile from Germany in 1933, though not published until the 1950s. It is the biography of a remarkable, complicated, passionate woman, and an important figure in German romanticism. Rahel Varnhagen also bore the burdens of being an unusual woman in a man s world and an assimilated Jew in Germany. She was, Arendt writes, neither beautiful nor attractive . . . and possessed no talents with which to employ her extraordinary intelligence and passionate originality. Arendt sets out to tell the story of Rahel s life as Rahel might have told it and, in doing so, to reveal the way in which assimilation defined one person s destiny. On her deathbed Rahel is reported to have said, The thing which all my life seemed to me the greatest shame, which was the misery and misfortune of my life having been born a Jewess this I should on no account now wish to have missed. Only because she had remained both a Jew and a pariah, Arendt observes, did she find a place in the history of European humanity. London: East and West Library, 1957. First edition. First edition. xiv, [ii], 222 pp. Bound in publisher's blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Very Good with slight bowing to boards, bump to text block along fore edge, in Very Good dust jacket with darkened spine panel, worn along edges, price sticker on front flap of 21' net. Uncommon in jacket. Arendt's second book to be published in English, which was written in 1938 in German but not published, following her doctrinal theses, which was published as her first book, concerning St. Augustine, Der Liebesbegriff bei Augustin. Versuch einer philosophischen Interpretation. Rahel Varnhagen is the biography of a prominent German Jewish writer and literary salon habitue (1771-1833) Arendt called her closest friend.
