Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Facsimile Document (illustratore). Limited edition, one of 26 large paper copies; brown c w/cream boards, lite soiling and foxing of boards; 212 clean unmarked pages, many uncut and so never read.John Williams the Deerfield, MA pastor who, in 1703, was taken captive by Indians and then marched off to Canada with others from his family and village. His infant child had been killed before his eyes, his wife - weakened by the recent childbirth - could not keep up the pace her captors required and was brutally murdered. His remaining children survived the march but they were split up. It's a compelling first hand account of the see-saw exchanges of violence that were occurring in 18th century New England. Size: 8 Vo.

Prima edizione
8vo, pp. 192. Illustrated with a frontispiece and a portrait. Bound in contemporary worn cloth (stained, etc). Some toning and staining, but a good copy. See Howes W461. Shaw & Shoemaker 3561; Ayer 391. The rare 1707 first edition was printed in Boston. One of the most famous and most popular captivity narratives. Williams, a Harvard graduate in charge of the church at Deerfield when it was attacked by Indians in 1703, was taken with others to Canada. His wife and two of his children were tomahawked on the way. "As a powerful picture of Indian cruelty, ranks next to the Rowlandson captivity narrative, published in 1682." - Howes. A later edition, after many others, beginning with the extremely rare 1707 first edition printed in Boston.
