Octavo. 397, [1] ad pp. Rebound in nineteenth-century full polished calf, ruled and lettered in gilt on spine, bound with new endpapers, but retaining the original front and rear flyleaves, half-title page, and publisher's ad leaf. Extremities of the binding are moderately rubbed, crown of spine is bumped with two short tears and nick to leather, else a very good copy, with the text quite fresh and clean. Arthur O'Leary was an ordained Franciscan at St. Malo where he served as prison chaplain until 1777, when he returned to Cork and began his missionary work. "Soon famous as a preacher, writer, and controversialist he published tracts characterized by learning, religious feeling, toleration, and steadfast allegiance to the Crown. A brilliant wit. he was commonly called the Catholic Swift of Ireland. From 1789 till his death he was chaplain to the Spanish embassy in London, and his society was courted by Burke, Sheridan, Fox, Fitzwilliam, and other leading men of Liberal views" [*Catholic Encyclopedia*].
