Damals, als ihre Mutter, eine frühere Schönheitskönigin, über Nacht ihre Familie verließ, drohte die zehnjährige Louise, ein sprödes, aber mit einem gehörigen Schuss Selbstironie ausgestattetes Mädchen, seelisch zu verkümmern. Zusammen mit dem Vater, dem der Verlust seiner Frau den Todesstoß versetzt hatte, bildete sie fortan eine Art Elendsverband. Alles änderte sich, als die deutschstämmigen Richters in ihre Straße zogen. In Mrs. Richter, einer herzlichen und walkürenhaften Erscheinung, erkannte Louise sofort den Mutterersatz. Der zarte Abel aber, der introvertierte Ziehsohn der Richters, sollte es sein, der Louise in seinen Bann schlagen würde. Mit ihm, dem großen Sensiblen, entdeckte sie die Natur -- und schließlich die Liebe. Eine fatale Bindung begann, die Louise das halbe Leben kosten sollte. Gut möglich, dass Michael Naumann, Herausgeber und Chefredakteur der Zeit, in seiner Ratlosigkeit gegenüber der Seelenpein dieser Heldin, eine wesentliche Lebenserfahrung nie gemacht hat: Die der abhängigen, nichtsdestoweniger unerfüllten Liebe, dieser vielleicht reinsten Form von Hingabe, von den Romantikern einst auf den Altar gehoben. Der große Weltumarmer, der niemals nein (und noch weniger ja) sagen konnte -- letztlich auch nicht zu Louises uneigennütziger Liebe -- säuft sich schleichend aus ihrer beider Leben. Ein schmerzlicher Abschied. Eine banale Story? Ein großes Buch. Groß in seinen präzisen Charakterzeichnungen und seinem genauen Blick in feinste seelische Verästelungen. Michael Naumann dürstete es offenbar danach, das Mysterium weiblicher Liebe durch Erklärungen nachvollziehbar zu machen. Barbara Gowdy kann sie ihm nicht liefern.
