Hardcover/gebunden. Condizione: gut. Erste Aufl. Catalog of an exhibition held at High Museum of Art, Atlanta, Georgia, June 5, 2010-Jan. 9, 2011. Peter Sekaer (1901-50) emerged as an artist in the company of Ben Shahn, Berenice Abbott, and Walker Evans. This book intends to show how he stepped from their benign shadows to build his own distinctive style. It is the first monograph to show the full range of his accomplishments. Sekaer's early work combines dispassionate images with others that show his concern and intuitive grasp of the human condition. Many of his most memorable photographs were made while fulfilling mundane assignments for various government agencies. Sekaer had none of the reformer's passion found in the works of Jacob Riis or Lewis Hine. His stance was more that of the artist/anthropologist, who delighted in recording the artifacts and gestures that defined American society in the 1930s. Hardcover, 228 pages, 25 x 31 cm (landscape format). Tekst NL / FR / ENG. ISBN 9789079669462. 'Signs of Life' is a photographic search for the core of our existence. Who are we, where did we come from and where are we going? Travelling between past and present, art photographer Eddy Van Gestel tries to find an answer to the question of whether or not the evolution that humans have gone through is a success story. With Signs of Life, he holds up a mirror to us humans and gently forces us to look at ourselves. The four chapters 'Perpetuum', 'Curves and colours', 'A deal with god' and 'Just Imagine,' which are seemingly unconnected, turn out on closer inspection to be inextricably linked. By linking them photographically, he makes it clear that nothing and no one is an island. Because that is precisely the point he wants to make: as humans, we cannot separate ourselves from our surroundings, from each other or from all other life on this planet. The intensity and fragility of his works makes it clear that our species may have developed a unique awareness and sense of aesthetics, but at the same time it is also weighed down by the uncertainty of life in general and the transience of existence in particular. Or how, as a proliferating, superior species, we seem to find it increasingly difficult to live in harmon. 0 g.
