Her mother was English and her father was Scottish, and when Alice was 13 her family moved to England. When she was 19 she traveled to the United States and trained to become a kindergarten teacher. Dalgliesh went on to receive a bachelor's degree in education at Columbia University in New York and then a master's degree in literature. Dalgliesh instructed children for almost 17 years, and she later taught a course in children's literature at Columbia. She became a United States citizen in 1928. Dalgliesh's first book was A Happy School Year (1924). The Silver Pencil (1944) . drew on her own experiences, following the main character from childhood on Trinidad to adulthood as a teacher and writer in the United States. (from Brittanica).
