Hard Back. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Assumed First Edition. 240 Pages. Anna Klane awoke. It seemed that someone had just called to her, that no time had elapsed since her last recollection. She heard professional-sounding voices; she smelled hospital. Good! The operation had worked and she was in the recovery room, alive. She smiled and opened her eyes. She tried to smile and open her eyes. She tried to open her eyes. Perhaps she should have waited for the anesthetic to wear off a bit more. All right, she could wait. There was no panic yet. Then Anna began to notice things. Her .legs were still strapped to a table. She could not move them, but sensed that it was not because of the restraining straps. Then the child realized that she was sitting up at a strange angle, that there were things pasted to her body and wires creeping over her legs. There was a mask over her face and a tube reaching down her throat into her lungs, and a distant voice she recognized as that of the surgeon, saying, "Activate the probe." She tried very hard to tell them what they were doing to her. While ten-year-old Anna Klane was undergoing brain surgery, a strange thing happened: she lost her soul. Before the operation, Anna had been an exceptional child. Thorough training in mind-control techniques had given the lovely girl an almost yogilike awareness and control of her body. So when Anna told her father that she could not discover the cause of a recent series of annoying symptoms, Anatol Klane feared something serious, perhaps something incurable. William Marker, the finest surgeon in their hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, confirmed his suspicions. Anna had a brain tumor. The tumor was operable, but Anna's chances of survival were only fifty percent-with or without brain damage. Curiously, she was cheerful. Having learned the exact location of the tumor, she was sure she could shrink it through mind control. Her father forbade the operation, but the authorities took him to court and won permission to operate. The surgery followed almost immediately. Dr. Marker considered it a complete success. He couldn't know that as his newest and most delicate instrument had probed through Anna's brain, he had caused her soul to abandon her body. In the following weeks she seemed to recover. But Anna was a different girl from the shining spirit, the bright, loving child she had been. Markedly different. This incredibly credible novel climaxes with the trial for murder that would put the name of Anna Klane in headlines because the defense lawyer would have a difficult, perhaps impossible task; he would have to prove the existence of the soul.
