Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 8vo. x + 222pp. With 31 illustrations in text most from engravings and photographs. Publisher's cloth within dust wrapper. An advocate of the efficacy of spas, the author carried out research in cardiology and rheumatic fever in Edinburgh, and for long edited The Practitioner and compiled Black's Medical Dictionary. The volume is a social history of spas from Roman times with details of the therapies they provide. The author laments the closure of Bath in 1976, calling attention to the continuing tradition of spas elsewhere in Europe, and the benefits of natural cures over drugs. He maintains that the spas of Britain were underfunded following the introduction of the National Health Service in 1948, unlike those in Europe, to the detriment of those with rheumatism and other complaints. In very good condition.
