Und zwar mit allen Eigenheiten, Vorzügen, Ticks und Manierismen. Da gibt es kein umständliches Sich-Reinfinden für den Leser. Er schlägt das Buch auf und los geht's. (.) es entspinnt sich eine Krimihandlung, deren Auflösung einen wirklich umtreibt. Und am Ende ist da nichts so, wie man es am Anfang dachte und man muss einräumen: Dieses Buch ist ein Wunder, an das man gerne glauben möchte." (Süddeutsche Zeitung, 20.3.2007). Marisha Pessl ist ein Phänomen. Gerade einmal dreißig Jahre ist die US-amerikanische Autorin alt -- und hat doch nach eigener Aussage nicht nur schon einige mehrere hundert Seiten starke unveröffentlichte Romane in der Schublade liegen, sondern mit Die alltägliche Physik des Unglücks auch ein 600-seitiges Romandebüt vorgelegt, das die New York Times 2006 zu den zehn besten Büchern des Jahres wählte. Heldin ist die brillante 16-jährige Halbwaise Blue van Meer, die sich durch einen Ozean an Literatur- und Filmklassikern durchgelesen und -gesehen hat und mit ihrem geheimnisvollen Vater Gareth, einem Universitätsdozenten, durch die Lande reist. Während letzterer die Damenwelt in Verzweiflung stürzt, gerät Blue in den Bann der charismatischen Lehrerin Hannah Schneider und ihres erlesenen Schülerkreises. Doch bald wird Schneider bei einem Ausflug erhängt aufgefunden. Und bei ihren Recherchen nach möglichen Hintergründen wird Blue ein ums andere Mal erschüttert. Die alltägliche Physik des Unglücks ist ein schwieriges Buch. Das hat nichts mit dem Umstand zu tun, dass es besonders schwer zu lesen wäre, im Gegenteil: Hier überrascht der Roman durch eine Machart, die für einen Erstling fast schon zu perfekt daherkommt. Schwierig sind vielmehr der ständige Rekurs der Autorin auf die Postmoderne und ihre überschäumende Zitierwut. Denn Die alltägliche Physik des Unglücks ist zu einem Gutteil aus Sätzen und Stimmungen anderer Autoren gebastelt, aus denen sich das Weltbild Blues zusammensetzt -- und deren Quellen dem Buch zudem noch in Klammern hinter den Sätzen beigegeben sind (siehe Unterwegs, Jack Kerouac, 1957). Das hemmt beizeiten nicht nur den Lesefluss, sondern verselbstständigt sich als Strategie auch dermaßen, dass man als Leser selbst da nach Zitaten Ausschau hält, wo (vielleicht?) gar keine zu finden sind. Aber vielleicht ist gerade das der Reiz von Pessls Debüt. Irgendwie hat man das Gefühl, als hätte man alles anderswo schon einmal gelesen.
