1st paperback ed. 507pp., appendices. A reprint of an extraordinary erotic autobiography originally published secretly at the turn of the century by Charles Carrington at Paris. Although the work has every indication of being an authentic memoir, the identity of its author remains a mystery. Internal evidence - the central character is called 'Jacky S.' or 'John S.' throughout, and seems very familiar with the English drama of the Restoration - points to John S. Farmer (1854-1916), a curious author who at first concerned himself with mysticism but later switched to unexpurgated lexicography, folk music and early English drama. The disagreeable circumstances of Grove Press's acquisition of the very rare original edition that they used to reprint from is detailed in the Preface to Patrick Kearney's THE PRIVATE CASE (London: 1981, p.65) The first reprint of an extraordinary erotic autobiography originally published secretly at the turn of the century by Charles Carrington at Paris.
