The previous owner, Arthur Woodward, was an active and prolific scholar in the fields of historical archaeology, museum curatorship, and military and Western history. Although his depth of knowledge and interests spanned many fields, he was particularly interested in the archaeology and history of California and the Southwest.(Arizona Historical Society) ABOUT THESE BOOKS: Defining a piece of artillery as a 'relatively complex engine powered by springs of resilient metal, composed of several mechanical devices, and designed to hurl bolts or shot over the longest possible range', Marsden presents a comprehensive account of the development and historical employment of ancient artillery from its invention in 399 BC to the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West (c. AD 400). Among the many topics raised are the influence of the introduction of artillery on warfare, the organization of artillery by states and monarchs, the obtaining of artificers and the training of artillery-men by ancient governments, and the effects of artillery on the design of fortifications. The work is based on the Greek and Latin texts describing the construction of catapults, ballistae and other machines translated in Greek and Roman Artillery: Technical Treatises.(Publisher) This volume contains studies of the ancient technical writings on catapulst construction which formed the basis for one important aspect of the historical account given in Greek and ROman Artillery, Historical Development. It includes the treatises of Biton and Philon of Byz antium, the relevant chapters of Vitruvius (x. 10-12), and the two artillery handbooks by Heron of Alexandria. The study of each work comprises text, translation, commentary, and explantory figures. A discussion of brief amateurish descriptions of later Roman arrow-shooting engines by Ammianus Marcellinus, Vegetius, and others, and a review of the fragmentary evidence for the construction of the onager, complete this examination of the sources for our knowledge of ancient artillery.(Publisher).
