[1], [1 blank], [45], [1 blank] pp. plus 1 loosely inserted leaf.A carefully planned and skilfully executed calligraphic copy-book, including a calligraphic title-page and colophon. Although it was made by a student, Willem Walbeek, over a period of 2½ months in one academic year, it is not merely a daily exercise book. It has the appearance of a writing master's copy-book and Walbeek probably produced and presented it to demonstrate his mastery. Most of the texts on the rectos are 2- to 4-line proverbs and aphorisms in verse, some about penmanship, other of a religious or moral nature. Most of the examples are executed in a round-hand sloped cursive script, with a few in upright cursive, roman capitals (occasionally with some minuscules), textura, fraktur and some decorative gothic hands. With two leaves removed (possibly by Walbeek himself), the ink shows through on most leaves, there are some water stains, and the head of the loosely inserted leaf is tattered, but the calligraphic samples are otherwise in good condition. The spine of the wrapper is tattered. A manuscript copy-book produced by a talented young student.

[32], 160, [1], [1 blank] pp.Third revised edition of Blondel's famous work on the composition and medicinal values of the sulphur springs in Aachen and Burtscheid. The Flemish doctor François Blondel (1613-1703), whose full-page engraved portrait is inserted after the table of contents, devoted his life to the promotion of the medicinal qualities of these springs. Since Roman times, the springs were known to provide relief against rheumatism, gout and scrofulous disorders. Blondel became inspector of the springs in 1666 and instituted a drinking course of the mineral water. Blondel's promotion of the springs also provided the city of Aachen, which suffered a major fire in 1656, with an important source of income.Blondel first published the first edition in 1671, the second in 1685 and the present third enlarged edition appeared in 1688. It includes recommendations from Dutch and German doctors, signed 1687 and 1688. It was translated into German and Dutch. In good condition with only a few small stains. Binding slightly rubbed and spine damaged (lacking most of the backstrip). The definitive edition, rarely found complete with all plates.l ADB II, p. 721; Krivatsy 1393; NBG V, cols. 251-261; VD17 23:239697E; Waller 1151; Wellcome II, p. 182.

Fine and rare large woodcut map, printed in three colours, of the harbour of Nagasaki, with mountainous landscape in the background and Chinese junks and two Dutch vessels standing out in the harbour, one of the Dutch ships being towed by Japanese oared craft to the Dutch trading post on the artificial island Deshima, left of the centre of the map. The names of the streets, temples and government offices at Nagasaki are all indicated. The two inserts with Japanese characters give the distances between Nagasaki and neighbouring domains as well as distances (by land and by sea) between Nagasaki and important cities throughout Japan. The map is printed by the Bunkindo publishing house in Nagasaki, who printed it for the first time in 1802 and later in 1813. An almost similar map was printed for the first time in 1764, at Nagasaki by Ohata Bunjiemon (another Bunjiemon edition appeared in 1778), differing for instance in the picturing of the Dutch vessels at the top. With each edition the map was slightly altered and improved.Fine map in original publishers etui. Some minor wear at folding areas.l Cf. [2], 186, [4] pp.Beautiful calligraphic manuscript by Claude Remy, writing master and tutor of the children of the Paris beau monde for more than a decade before the French Revolution. The author-calligrapher notes in an epilogue that he had executed more than 60 similar instructive manuscripts, not only for his pupils but also for their parents, who greatly valued them, but few have survived. Remy executed it for and presented to Raoul de Choiseul-Gouffier, the young son of Gabriel Auguste, Comte de Choiseul-Gouffier (1752-1817), author of Voyage pittoresque en Grèce, who served as French ambassador to the Ottoman Empire from 1784 to the French Revolution, then fled to Russia in 1793 where he served Catharine the Great and her successors as Imperial Librarian and director of the Imperial Academy of Arts at Saint Petersburg. He returned to France in 1802, when the Treaty of Amiens brought temporary peace. Raoul became head of the Russian branch of the Knights of Malta and appears to have succeeded his father as count in 1817.Remy's "avertissement" notes that he taught not only writing, but also reading, arithmetic, Latin, geography and several other subjects, but that he especially loved to teach the science of the four elements, the principal subject of the present manuscript. It clearly and methodically presents the traditional scientific ideas about air, fire, water and earth, including chapters on the properties of the elements, wind, hurricanes, the moon, the sun, heat, clouds, different climates, the tropics, the continents, the poles, oceans, bays, islands, rivers, floods, eclipses, the products of the earth, bodies, blood, senses, spirit, perspective and geography, even straying to topics such as the church, nobility, government, finances, commerce, artisans, wealth, poverty, education and the existence of God. The 6-page table of contents lists nearly a hundred topics covered. Two earlier Remy manuscripts of his Traité des quatre elémens are known, also executed for leading families in Paris. With armorial bookplate. An occasional very minor spot and very slight browning, but otherwise in fine condition. Binding very slightly worn at the extremities but otherwise also fine. A fine calligraphic manuscript executed for the young son of a French count and ambassador to the Ottoman Empire.l For Choiseul-Gouffier: S.H. Allen, Finding the walls of Troy (1999), pp. 41-44; A.F. Spada, Ephémérides Russes ., vol. 2 (1816), pp. 221-222.
