Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Without dust jacket. Facsimile Reprint. Facsimile of the original 1855 edition on specially 'aged' paper. PLEASE NOTE: though the copy is essentially 'unread' and been in storage since publication, the paper used has further yellowed and the faux leather cover has hardened. Octavo, 8" tall, xxxvii + 366 + 10 pages. An unread copy which was bound in a cheap material often used with textbooks in the 1960s which sadly hardens with age. This is a 'new' copy in only very good minus condition, but spine edges have some chipping at bottom, and the fore-edges are lightly darkened; otherwise with little actual shelf wear. Interior hinges and binding solid, paper artificially browned to appear aged, and replicate the original with this facsimile of the 1855 edition, so how much yellowing there is cannot be determined. Clear plastic wrapper has become brittle. Still a terrific reading copy of this historic portrait of the 'Mosquito Coast' of old Central America.

"[Squier] was honored at home and abroad as one of the most distinguished Americanists of the nineteenth century, and is perhaps the best single authority on the Central America of the period." (DAB) He served as chargé d'affaires to Central America, 1849-50, secretary of the Honduras Interoceanic Railway Company, 1853, and United States commissioner to Peru, 1863-65, and published several works on the archaeological remains and general conditions of the Latin American countries he visited. The present work describes the Mosquito Coast, the east coast of Nicaragua from Cape Gracias à Diós to Bluefields Lagoon, native manners and customs, flora and fauna. At the end is a short glossary of the Mosquito language.
