In seinem Buch Wilde Intelligenz stellt der Neurologe und Verhaltensforscher Marc D. Hauser große Fragen über kleine Gehirne. Obwohl seine Forschungsobjekte für Befragungen nicht zur Verfügung stehen, glaubt er, dass man dennoch Einblick in ihr inneres Leben gewinnen kann, indem man ihr Verhalten im Kontext mit ihrem sozialen und physischen Umfeld untersucht. Insofern ist er beim Vergleich der Handlungen von Schimpansen, Ratten, Honigbienen und menschlichen Säuglingen bemüht im Auge zu behalten, dass jeder von ihnen seine eigenen Bedürfnisse hat, die unterschiedliche Formen der Intelligenz und Emotionen erfordern und nicht nach denselben Kriterien beurteilt werden dürfen. Bei der Untersuchung von Handlungen wie Zählen, geografischer Orientierung, Selbstverständnis, Täuschung und anderen intelligenten Aktivitäten, demonstriert Hauser, dass Vögel und Bienen viel mehr denken, als man ihnen bisher zugetraut hatte. Hauser ist zwar bewusst, welch gewaltige Kluft die Sprache zwischen dem Menschen und anderen Lebewesen darstellt; er vertritt dennoch die Meinung, dass dieses Werkzeug nur eins unter vielen darstellt und keinesfalls ein besserer Beweis für überlegene Intelligenz ist als beispielsweise das außerordentlich hoch entwickelte Sonarsystem der Fledermäuse. Im letzten Kapitel befasst sich Hauser mit moralischem Verhalten und stellt fest, dass Tiere zwar "moralische Empfänger, nicht aber moralisch verantwortlich handelnde Wesen" sein können. Das bedeutet, dass ihre Unfähigkeit, anderen Tieren seelische Verfassungen beizumessen, sie für ihr Handeln ihnen gegenüber freispricht, ihre Fähigkeit zu leiden ihnen jedoch das Recht zugesteht, vom Menschen gerecht behandelt zu werden.
