"Mickey" Schubert is chief of joint operational history in the Joint History Office, Office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff. He is a graduate of Howard University (BA, 1965), the University of Wyoming (MA, 1970), and the University of Toledo (Ph.D., 1977), and a Vietnam veteran. Dr. Schubert s twenty-two years as a Department of Defense historian include thirteen with the Army Corps of Engineers (1977-1989). During that time he wrote extensively on exploration of the American west and various aspects military construction. He is the author of Building Air Bases in the Negev: the US Army Corps of Engineers in Israel, 1979-1982 (1992), Buffalo Soldiers, Braves, and the Brass: the Story of Fort Robinson, Nebraska (1993), and On the Trail of the Buffalo Soldier: Biographies of African Americans in the U.S. Army, 1866-1917 (1995). He is also general editor, along with Theresa L. Kraus, of The Whirlwind War: the United States Army in Operations. His latest work is Black Valor: Buffalo Soldiers and the Medal of Honor, 1870-1898 (1997). This narrative is designed to provide an overview of the role of the United States Army in the conflict with Iraq that took place from August 1990 through February 1991. Discusses the United States Army's role in the Persian Gulf War from August 1990 to February 1991. Shows the various strands that came together to produce the army of the 1990s and how that army in turn performed under fire and in the glare of world attention. Retains a sense of immediacy in its approach. Contains maps which were carefully researched and compiled as original documents in their own right.

The result is a volume that takes its place in the first round of the historical analysis of the events described. Frank N. "Mickey" Schubert (born June 3, 1943) is an American author and military historian. He was the chief of joint operational history in the Joint History Office, Office of the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff until his retirement in 2003. He is a graduate of Howard University (BA, 1965), the University of Wyoming (MA, 1970), and the University of Toledo (Ph.D., 1977). He is a veteran of the Vietnam War and worked as a historian in the Department of Defense for the US Army Corps of Engineers (1977-1989), the US Army Center of Military History (1989-1993), and the Joint History Office of the Office of the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1993-2003). He was a Fulbright scholar at Babes Bolyai University in Cluj, Romania, during the academic year 2003-2004 and has lectured at universities and research centers in seven European countries. Dr. Kraus joined the FAA in 1991 as a senior historian, and subsequently served as an analyst in the Air Traffic Organization's Operations Planning Research and Development Office. Prior to her 2009 appointment as the agency historian, she authored and co-authored a range of articles and publications on the FAA and aviation history, including The Federal Aviation Administration: A Historical Perspective, 1903-2008, in celebration of the agency's 50th anniversary. Before working for the FAA, Dr. Kraus worked for the U.S. Army Center of Military History, where she authored and co-edited the Army's official history of Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm, The Whirlwind War. Dr. Kraus holds a Ph.D. in history from the University of Maryland. Some of her additional works include chapters in anthologies and a variety of articles appearing in military and aviation magazines and journals.
