Contains 44 stories, twelve of which appear as short sketches under the title "Him and Her". Another twelve sketches are under the title "The Little Old Lady", five as "Uncle Sylvester Dreamt of Heaven". One story appears for the first time, two were first published in "The Atlantic Monthly", the rest are reprinted from "The Oregonian", the newspaper that Lampman was Associate Editor of for many years. There is slight browning of the edges, lower corners of boards show some slight damp stains, but a very good copy in a very good dust jacket that is a little browned with shallow chipping to spine ends and small loss to base of front panel.

(pen and ink drawings) INSCRIBED generically ("Sincerely,") and SIGNED by the author on the ffep. 44 stories and sketches, in which the author draws on "his knowledge of nature and of human beings," and is said to be writing "in the tradition of John Burroughs, John Muir, and Thoreau." A dozen stories are about an old farm couple in the Pacific Northwest, another dozen about an elderly woman "whose children have grown and moved away and whose husband is gone," and five about "Uncle Sylvester and his adventures in heaven." The remainder are pieces "on a miscellany of ideas and themes, which range from straight narrative to a beautiful and almost mystical allegory." Signed by Author.

A collection of sketches and short stories, including twelve sketches of ''Him and Her'' portray an old farm couple in the Pacific Northwest; five sketches are based on ''Uncle Sylvester'' and his adventures in heaven--including his going fishing; the story of a boy who rescues a sea bird; and many other pieces which range from straight narrative to a beautiful and almost mystical allegory. Inscribed by Lampman to Leonard Wiley (1904-1987), botanist, author of two books on plants of the Pacific Northwest, biographer of Frederic Homer Balch, and Lampman's close personal friend. Ben Hur Lampman (1886-1954) was an Oregon writer whose range with the written word extended from poetry (he was Oregon's Poet Laureate, 1951-1954), short stories, and essays, to reporter and newspaper editor. He won the O. Henry Award for short story in 1943. Quincy Scott (1882-1965) was an artist and editorial cartoonist for The Oregonian from 1931 to1949. Signed by Author(s).
