Égalité des génies à travers les siècles, solidarité des persona non grata à travers leur diaspora, affleurement du récit de soi derrière la biographie d autrui, William Shakespeare a la réputation d uvre "inclassable" car elle pratique le mélange des genres (essai littéraire, biographie, autobiographie, pamphlet politique) et relève d un effort utopique pour échapper au genre. Chaque partie commence certes par parler de Shakespeare, mais le sujet dérive rapidement vers la question du génie.
