First Edition Inscribed by Dr. Suzuki on the ffe. 8vo. 302 pp. A fine copy in the publisher's original navy cloth covered boards, stamped silver on the spine in a fine pictorial dustwrapper depicting the author. Award winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster, Suzuki's television appearances, explaining the complexities of the natural sciences in a compelling and easily understood way, have consistently earned him high acclaim. Recognized as a world leader in sustainable ecology Dr. Suzuki has received the Kalinga Prize for Science, the United Nations Environment Medal and the Global 500. ' Life on this planet has existed now for almost four billion years. During that time, of course, there have been a number of extinction crises, when large numbers of species have suddenly disappeared from the planet. We're going through a period that looks like a major extinction crisis, but it's different from any other situation that has ever existed in that it is being driven by a single species. We're in an absolutely unprecedented situation. Human beings are now the most numerous mammals on the planet. All over the planet, our species has become so demanding that we are destroying habitat for other species. It's not j ust the tropical rain forests, it's the temperate rain forests, wetlands, coral reefs, grasslands. A very conservative estimate at the present time is that at least fifty thousand species of plants and animals are going extinct every y ear. That's over six species an hour-vanishing forever. Our grandchildren certainly are going to live in a world that may see up to fifty percent of mammalian species gone, certainly a quarter of all bird species gone. Absolutely catastrophic.'.

The translator, Clarissa Spencer Bostelmann's set with strong original provenance; the bookplate of SAMUEL W. PENNYPACKER[1843 - 1916 / Governor of Pennsylvania from 1903 to 1907, Americanist, President of the Historical Society of Pennsylvania] on the front pastedown of each volume. These volumes are finely printed and illustrated. Of special note are: the portrait of Washington engraved from a cameo executed by Madame Brehan in NY (1789); the powerful pictures of an Onondaga sachem and Koohassen, an Oneida warrior; and the fine maps & plans, including a large folding map of the Southern United States, engraved by Tardieu. "Original work of this author, presented under the guise of a translation." - Howes Only his initials appear at the end of the dedication to George Washington. "This work is distinguished by its valuable details on the aboriginal tribes, and their gradual disappearance. No other writer has so well described the Indian great councils, or assemblies, where they deliberate on their public interests.". Howes C884; Sabin 17501; Brunet II, 424 Crevecoeur [1731-1813] traveled widely in America after the French & Indian War, and became a naturalized citizen in 1765. In the Revolution he chose the Loyalist side, and during the War he resided in France. During this separation from his adopted home he wrote: LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN FARMER. "This volume was more widely read in England & Europe and had a greater influence in attracting its readers toAmerica than any other book of the period" - Vail 674. When he returned toAmerica in 1783 he found that his home had been burnt by Indians, and that his wife and children were gone. This present work was written during the difficult years of the French Revolution. It was intended to be merely a fourth volume of the "Letters From an American Farmer", but Crevecoeur eventually created an entirely new work. In its pages one discovers the final evolution of his ideas, intimate observations, and dreams aboutAmerica. It is filled with details on the gradual disappearance of the aboriginal tribes and the great Indian Councils. He also had intimate knowledge of the characters of the founding fathers. Crevecoeur was, for many years, the French Consul inNew York and enjoyed the friendship of Washington,Franklin, and other leaders. The author spent nearly 25 years in America, saw Washington, in 1774, come to the first Congress fresh from his farm, witnessed his extraordinary career, and in 1797, saw him return to private life as an agriculturalist.

Talking is silence. "Silence is gold" Wish you the very best from the heart. T F Back sept 11 1965" A fine copy in handmade decorative paper covered boards, printed glossy paper label on the upper cover limited edition of 3000 copies in the original glassine outer wrapper showing some light sunning. This volume was dedicated to Albert Einstein and is the only book that was ever written by "The Father of the Zoom Lens". With / An original black & white, silver gelatin 5 x 7 photograph of Dr. Albert Einstein and Dr. Frank Gerald Back seated together, in very fine condition acquired directly from Dr. Back's estate. This photograph was taken circa 1954 and is one of the images published in this limited edition. With An 18" x 22" blueprint [folded] of the Solar Eclipse Spectrograph size "C" drawing. It was made from the original drawing, dated 4/1/55, drawn by Zoomar's Chief Designer, Alfred Joseph Quittner ("AJQ"), & approved by Dr. Back ("FGB"). A very interesting package indeed. Dr. Back was a very close friend of Albert Einstein. Dr. Einstein persuaded the author to take the trip commemorated in this beautifully produced volume in order to capture the total eclipse of the sun, which occurred on June 20, 1955. Dr. Back intended to provide conclusive evidence for Einstein's theory of relativity by calculating the optical distortion, if any, of starlight caused by the sun's gravity. Earlier, in 1919, Einstein's general relativity principles were supported by observations of a solar eclipse. The two scientists conferred on the project for over a year. Armed with a special Zoomar designed & built, wide-angle, solar-eclipse, spectrograph, Dr. Back was off to the Philippine Islands to board a military jet & chase the eclipse. Einstein however died while Back was on his way to Manila. Unable to report the excursion to his friend, Dr. Back dedicated this book to his memory. Dr. Frank Back held over 200 patents directly relating to photographic equipment. He was the founder & president of Zoomar, Inc. The photographic term, " zoom" was derived from Zoomar. Dr. Back created the first widely used zoom lenses for motion picture and television; then in 1959, introduced the first zoom lens for still cameras with the introduction of the 36-82mm/f2.8 Voigtlander Zoomar. Dr. Back & Zoomar purchased the great Heinz Kilfitt optical factory of Munich, Germany in 1966 & it became a subsidiary of Zoomar, Inc. This volume was never widely distributed & when Zoomar, Inc. ceased operations at Glen Cove, Long Island, many cases of this book were discovered & unceremoniously trashed. The existing number of copies is unknown but the book is not frequently encountered. This copy came from the personal estate of Dr. Frank Gerald Back & it is one of the few copies signed by him. An excellent example suited for collectors of Science, Astronomy, Einstein, Zoomar, or Photographic History in general. In a lovely custom clamshell case with a window insert displaying the original Einstein/Back photo. *On page 13 there is a typo. He wrote July 30,1954 instead of June 30, 1954 and was never changed.

A lovely example of the very uncommon edition preceded only by the signed limited edition issued in the USA and simultaneously in the United Kingdom. Woolf's major polemic against patriarchy, based loosely on two lectures she delivered, one at Newnham and the other at Girton. Kirkpatrick and Clarke A12a. Woolmer 215. Woolf observed in her diary, "I shall be attacked for a feminist". An increasingly uncommon & important Woolf title & 20th century literary highlight. Rare copy. Kirkpatrick A12c.

Hardcover. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First Edition. Hardcover. Fisher, M. F. K. HOW TO COOK A WOLF. Advance Review Copy. New York: Duell, Sloan and Pearce, [1942]. Plain unprinted white wrappers in dustwrapper. First Edition. 8vo., 261pp. A fine copy in a very good or better dustwrapper that is glued by the publisher to the spine & showing some rubbing there. A rare state of the author's third book; perhaps the only example to come to market in the last 25 years. Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf" in 1942, in the midst of World War II, just as food rationing programs were kicking into high gear with strict limits placed on basics like sugar, butter, meat, & coffee. War-time slogans encouraged American households to "make do, or do without." [Fisher wrote "How to Cook a Wolf." as a reminder of the pleasure - the rapture - you could still find in food, even under a tight budget or war-time rationing. "I early on thought, as long as we have to eat to live, we may as well have fun doing it. There should be some enjoyment of food, as we do with making love, or keeping warm. It's one of the three basic needs of our lives," she said. "How to Cook a Wolf" reads like an issue of Lady's Home Journal, if the editorial staff were taken over by a philosopher with an empty stomach, a slightly tipsy poet and your mischievous, foxy godmother who once kept many lovers. Best lines include: "Probably one of the most private things in the world is an egg, until it is broken." On cooking during a war-time black-out: "Use as many fresh things as you can, always, and then trust to luck and your blackout cupboard and what you have decided, inside yourself, about the dignity of man." And this advice, from the chapter called "How to Lure the Wolf": "One way to look your prettiest in the kitchen, and make the wolf think that even if his hot breath whuffs through the keyhole and ruffles your very curls you are nigh adamant, is to put up a little mirror." "How to Cook a Wolf" is part cookbook, part essay collection. Fisher shares practical recipes that can be made cheaply: how to make your own toothpaste; a recipe for fried calves' brains, since that cut of meat was cheaper and more readily available under rationing programs; instructions for a good, low-cost sherry cocktail.] - Weekend America. Rare.
