Da: Arch Bridge Bookshop (Bellows Falls, VT, U.S.A.)
Descrizione: J. & H. Langley, Philadelphia, 1841. Leather Bound. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 4th Edition. "Democracy in America . in two volumes: " Vol. I" and "Part the Second", 4th edition. Volume I translated by John C. Spencer, Volume II translated by Henry Reeve. Both volumes newly rebound in full calf leather. This 1840/1841 publication is very scarce. "Democracy in America by Alexis. de Tocqueville is a general study of on American society. He arrived in May of 1831 and spent nine months traveling within the United States collecting a variety of information on American society such as: its religious, political and economic character." Volume I includes a large foldout colorized map of the Census of 1840, its overall condition is near fine. Some light foxing spots on edge of title page. On several text pages there are a few small foxing spots on edges, not affecting the text. Overall condition of text pages is near fine. 494 pages in volume I. Volume II: On about 18 pages there a few small foxing spots on page edges, not affecting the text. Overall condition of text pages better than very good to near fine. 355 pages in volume II. Book's impact: "Democracy in America" was first published in two volumes in 1835. It was immediately popular in both Europe and in the U.S. while also having a profound impact on the French population. By the twentieth century it had become a classic work of political science, social science, and history. Finally, in the introduction to his translation of the book Harvard Professor Harvey C. Mansfield calls it 'at once the best book ever written on democracy and the best ever written on America'" These two full calf light brown leather bindings are an example of current fine leather bindings at its very best. Rebound in June 2019 by The Chester Bookworm in Vermont in two volumes in full calf leather supplied by J. Hewit and Son of Edinburgh, Scotland. The leather supplied Hewit was undyed and the bookbinder dyed it with German analine dyes, resulting in leather having a light brown followed by a mid-brown and finally a dark brown. This has resulted in the leather having an "aged look" with the three browns showing. The two volumes have hollow back spines with five raised bands, with gilt titling on the spines, and blind tooling on the boards and spine for decoration. The endpapers are hand marbled from Il Papiro in Venice, Italy. Codice articolo 8959

Quantità: 1
Da: Buddenbrooks, Inc. (Newburyport, MA, U.S.A.)
Descrizione: New York George Dearborn & Co.; Adlard and Saunders 1838, 1838. The first American edition of the landmark work on American government. 8vo, bound in handsome three-quarter blue morocco over marbled boards, the spine with blind ruled raised bands creating six compartments, four of which with large central gilt device, the other two gilt lettered and trimmed with gilt chain lines, and with additional gilt chains at the head and foot. xxx, 464 pp. An attractive copy, formerly of the Boston Library and deaccessioned in 1940 with signifying stamp to the title page and final leaf of text, a few neat scholarly notations, a sturdy and sound copy the text-block clean with only minor occasional foxing or other light evidence of age or use. The binding is in very fine condition and as pristine. THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA, WHICH "REMAINS THE BEST PHILOSOPHICAL DISCUSSION OF DEMOCRACY, ILLUSTRATED BY THE EXPERIENCE OF THE UNITED STATES, UP TO THE TIME WHEN IT WAS WRITTEN, WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN ANY LANGUAGE."- Gilman. "One of the most important texts of political literature" (PMM). The book grew out of a trip to the United States De Tocqueville took as an assistant magistrate, with Gustave de Beaumont, in order to study the American penitentiary system for France. From New York City they travelled as far east as Boston, as far west as Green Bay, as far north as Sault Ste. Marie and Quebec, and as far south as New Orleans. Their analysis was published in 1833, and immediatly afterward Tocqueville began to write the work by which he is best remembered. DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA treats specific aspects of government and politics, including the principal of popular sovereignty, the nature of the states and local government, judicial power, the American Constitution, political parties, freedom of the press, suffrage, the role of the majority and the methods used to ensure against its tyranny, and the present and possible future of the three races making up the population--whites, blacks, and the indigenous peoples. There is also a discussion of the difficulties inhibiting the creation of an aristocracy, and an analysis of the causes of prosperity. DEMOCRACY IN AMERICA "remains the best philosophical discussion of democracy, illustrated by the experience of the United States, up to the time when it was written, which can be found in any language. More than this is true. Notwithstanding the changes which have occurred in the material and social circumstances of the United States during the last sixty years [written in 1898], the consequent elimination of certain factors in the civilization of this country, and the introduction of new and unforeseen problems,--notwithstanding all this, the student of modern popular government must revert to Tocqueville. When his work appeared, democracy was to some an 'ideal,' a 'brilliant dream;' to others, 'ruin, anarchy, robbery, murder.' De Tocqueville wished to lessen the fears of the latter, the ardor of the former class. He treats Democracy as a fact" (Daniel Gilman, in his introduction to the 1898 edition, quoted by Larned 2807). De Tocqueville's conclusions about the system of government chosen by the young nation, and the implications of that choice, have been reexamined by each succeeding generation since it was originally published. Rebacked, with renewed spine cloth. xvi, 455 p. Foxing throughout. English translation of "De la democratie en Amerique," first published in French in 1835. Tocqueville's extremely important and influential analysis of American democracy is "one of the most important texts in political literature." (PMM). Democracy in America is "the first systematic and empirical study of the effects of political power on modern society" (Nisbet). Overall, Tocqueville's conclusions were that the trend of history would irresistibly lean towards equality; and that the future of France, indeed of the Western world, was bound up with the acceptance of democratic principles, these being the one effective means of avoiding submission to tyranny (Harvey and Heseltine, 711). Democracy in America, written by French lawyer Alexis de Tocqueville in 1831, documents his travels through America where he finds an equality unknown in Europe. When Alexis de Tocqueville came to study Democracy in America, the trial of nearly a half-century of the working of our system had been made, and it had been proved, by many crucial tests, to be a government of liberty regulated by law, with such results in the development of strength, in population, wealth, and military and commercial power, as no age had ever witnessed. Democracy in America was received at once by the scholars and thinkers of Europe as a profound, impartial, and entertaining exposition of the principles of popular, representative self-government.
