Descrizione: Boston: Houghton, Mifflin, 1918, 1918. First Edition of the author's widely acknowledged masterpiece. The plates are in the first state; front hinge cracked; rear hinge mended, but overall very nearly fine; in a custom, brown quarter-morocco slipcase and chemise. The first printing comprised 3500 copies, of which about 2500 were issued with the plates in the first state, printed on coated paper. Cather was meticulous in her specifications for the book's production, commissioning W.T. Benda to do the illustrations. Particularly concerned that the illustrations be at their proper places in the book, she also wanted them to be on the same paper as the text. Apparently displeased with the production and promotion of this book, Cather subsequently left Houghton, Mifflin for Knopf, her publisher for the remainder of her career. Boston. 419 pages. 1918. 1st edition, 1st printing. Illustrations on coated paper. Copyright page states PUBLISHED OCTOBER 1918 and no later printings noted. Title page has 1918 date. There were a total of 3500 copies printed of this title in the first printing. The first state of the 1st printing has W.T. Benda's illustrations on coated / glossy paper. Cather objected to the paper selection and the remaining print run was printed on the same paper used throughout the book or "text" paper. While it is believed that 2500 copies were printed on coated paper and only 1000 on regular paper, it is still the coated paper editions that are the preferred printing of collectors. The DJ of this title is virtually impossible to find in the first issue with 10 titles on the DJ rear. This offering does not have the 1st issue DJ, instead a replica of the First issue as printed by the First Edition Library. Again, the book is an original 1st printing with coated paper stock on illustration pages and ONLY the DJ is a replica. Replica DJ is not laser printed rather a quality printing from the First Edition Library. As for the book, it is better than VG. Book is VG+. Book is tight and clean. Brown boards with orange titling on both the front panel and the backstrip. Panels show light rubbing at the corner tips. Inside panel has a light bookseller code written in pencil. There is a small closed tear to the edge of the FFEP that has been professionally and archivally sealed and repaired with archival tape. 2 faint cloud stains to top page edges. pages lay tight. binding and hinges are strong. only most minor soiling to page edges. AN exceptional copy of the rare classic in the true 1st state with a complimentary replica DJ and protective slipcase. VG+. Codice articolo 000974
