Descrizione: UK, 1968. Original Wraps. Condizione: Very Good. New Edition. A SMALL COLLECTION OF LETTERS AND 5 PERSONAL PHOTOGRAPHS FROM LAWRENCE DURRELL TO THE BBC PRODUCER, AND HIS LOVER, MARGARET MCCALL. Margaret McCall was a BBC producer, born in 1925 and died in 2008. She was married to the television script writer Philip Broadley who nicknamed her 'Lauren' due to her resemblance to Lauren Bacall. In Broadley's obituary in The Times newspaper, Margaret is mentioned: 'She joined BBC TV and went on to produce some of the corporation's finest arts and music documentaries in the 1960s and 1970s, introducing numerous writers and artists to television for the first time. Among them were Lawrence Durrell, with whom she developed a special friendship, John Betjeman, who likewise became a close friend, Robert Graves and Graham Sutherland.' This 'special relationship' was (more than probably) a love affair with Durrell, on and off, between 1967 and 1972. Here is a list of the Durrell items which are all to the BBC producer Margaret McCall: 1) Date not certain but probably 1967. A.N.S. to the reverse of a postcard of the Parthenon, explaining that it is the view from the room which she will have at the hotel in Athens. Signed with initials. Very good condition apart from one very small tear at the top. 2) Date again uncertain, probably 1967. A.N.S. to the reverse of a colour picture postcard of a priest on Corfu. Durrell compares himself with the priest stating, 'you will hardly recognise me in my new disguise brooding heavily on the past in this charming cove.' and comments that his motor home Escargot 'feels awfully roomy now you have gone'. Signed with initials. Very good condition. 3) Date uncertain, probably 1967. A.L.S. to the reverse of a colour postcard of the amphitheatre in Athens, making arrangements about McCall's film to be made in Greece. Signed with first name. Very good condition. 4) T.L.S., one side, May 1970, on headed notepaper. He gives details of his illness when he was in Paris and how therefore he has moved the date of the French radio coming to his house. He explains he has visitors soon including his brother Gerald. 'I've finished my vampire book in a new form with the poems typed and tidy now and not too bad'. He tells Margaret about his friendship with a young pop singer - 'I think I'll write a number for her'. He comments on the physical work he has been doing and explains that Gerald wants to rent his house 'to shoot his Fabre' (A film about the life of Jean-Henri Fabre( He mentions the Sunday Times account of his musical. Signed 'Much love, Larry'. With five personal photos including ones of himself with others. With envelope addressed in his hand. 5) A.L.S. to the reverse of a large colour picture postcard, September 1970. He explains the buggy is just what he wanted and that he is 'painting like mad' for his exhibition in Paris. He also mentions a song he has written which is going to be recorded. Signed 'Much love Larry Durrell'. Good condition. 6) T.L.S. on both sides of an old Carte postale. He is anxious about his forthcoming Epfs art exhibition in Paris - 'the thing has got out of hand . a nice uncrowded private joke is being whipped up . Figaro has already carried pics of the pics . I fear all this may be too successful'. He comments on a friend's illness and an accident another friend has had. He explains he is 'working madly on the water colour section. Never again will show after this lot . I must start a book'. Mentions Henry Miller. Signed 'Love L'. With envelope addressed in his hand 7) T.L.S., 1 1/2 sides of headed notepaper, November 1970, beginning 'Darling Margaret'. He thanks her for coming to Epfs and explains he has had four days of non-stop interviews 'including .! and assorted nightshrts . I must also apologise for knocking you down on the Bongoland floor but you fall so beautifully'. He explains his leprosy has begun to clear and that he has done some yoga and walking. He gives details of the 'lovely autumn down here'. He explains that although he ate forbidden food in Paris, he has lost a kilo - 'is it you I have to thank?'. He has had a 'very chirpy' letter from his daughter Saph. He had been worried that Margaret was falling in love with somebody else. He continues 'I hover like a moth over a book'. He finishes the letter very affectionately, 'Well now dalring M, work hard, reflect a bit on me. I send you a specially tender baiser d'amour. And other chunks of the inexpressible, Love Larry'. He adds a handwritten note about General de Gaulle (who had just died). With envelope addressed in his hand. 8) T.L.S., one side of headed notepaper, January 1971. McCall has spent Christmas with him. He is working hard. He comments on their relationship - in part, 'Once upon a time you drew a chalk line and since I have been careful not to step over it. It's not my affair how you see things, or how you do things'. He makes comments about cars and buggies he is investigating. He gives details about friends who are now staying with him. He is bored and may go to Paris. 'I have axed smoke and drink with the usual result - down two kilos in three days . I feel so well on it'. Finishes by stating, Big sentiments are banned so I won't be too expansive and blush you; I think about you a bit but what I think is my own affair, don't you see? Grosse Bise, Larry. Next to it he hand draws a heart. With envelope with typed address. To the reverse of Durrell's letter is a rough draft by McCall of her reply, mentioning her feelings for both her husband and Durrell. 9) T.L.S., one side of headed notepaper, April 1972. He thanks her for her 'Easter egg visit. It was fine, as well as a trifle confusing in a queer way. I felt first very elated then all at sea then in the dark then extremely elated. Tomorrow I shall either feel elated or else that we are going to walk the plank'. (The relationship is beginning to cool and Durrell is unsure of his feelings etc). He has sent off the Rhone book - 'It has everything in it suitable for the subject'. Codice articolo 014006

Descrizione: Faber and Faber, London, 1960. Cloth. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. A very solid example of the true 1st editions, 1st issues of the 4 titles which make up Durrell's masterful "Alexandria Quartet". Published separately between 1957-1960, the Quartet includes "Justine" (1957), followed in quick succession by "Balthazar" (1958), "Mountolive" (1958) and, finally, "Clea" (1960). All 4 books have held up very well and all 4 are tight and Near Fine in crisp, price-intact, VG+ or better dustjackets. Save for a bit of very light chipping at the spine crowns and just a touch of darkening along several of the spines, this is an attractive, very well-preserved set. Codice articolo 13661

Quantità: 1
Da: Shapero Rare Books (London, Regno Unito)
Descrizione: London Faber and Faber -1960, 1957. First editions, first impressions, four volumes, 8vo., comprising Justine, internally fine, dust-jacket, price-clipped with two small closed chips and one small, closed tear to spine edges, light dust-soiling and a few spots to edges and fore-edge, otherwise very good and a better than usual example , 1957; Balthazar, internally fine, dust-jacket toned at extremities and on spine, closed tear to base of upper fold on spine, otherwise near-fine, 1958; Mountolive, fine, 1958; Clea, internally fine, a couple of minor marks to upper panel of dust-jacket but none of the usual fading to the spine, 1960; original cloth, bright, in all a very good-plus set. At the age of 11, Durrell, who was born in the North of India near Tibet, was obliged to move to England. He disliked living in such a different country and culture and never fully adapted to it. Only later, in 1935, when he and his family made a decision to live in Greece he felt that it reminded him of India. While in Greece, he drafted a novel entitled The Book of the Dead, a predecessor to his first volume of The Alexandria Quartet. However, only much later, in 1952, after his return to the Mediterranean, Durrell began actually writing Justine. During the 1940s he had worked for the British Information Office in Egypt. He was separated from his first wife, Nancy Myers, and in Alexandria he met Eve Cohen, a Jewish woman on whom the character of Justine is loosely based and who became his second wife. Durrell would eventually complete the Quartet in France. The Alexandria Quartet was a success, both with the critics and with an increasing readership and Durrell was acknowledged as being one of the most important writers of his time. Spine ends gently bumped, short closed tear to rear board, light rubbing. A near-fine copy in the very good dust jacket, slight toning to spine and edges, a few edge-splits, minor loss to spine ends and rear panel. First one-volume edition, first impression, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For Margaret McCall from Larry Durrell" along with a full-page drawing of a map titled "Languedoc by Epfs" and showing Sommières, Nîmes, Uzès, Cevennes, and Anduze. These places were of particular importance to him: "he completed Justine, the first volume of the Quartet, on Cyprus in 1956, after his separation from Eve, and wrote the remaining three volumes in Languedoc, where he lived near Nîmes and in Sommières" (ODNB). The recipient Margaret McCall (1925-2008) was a BBC producer. She was married to the television script writer Philip Broadley who nicknamed her "Lauren" due to her resemblance to Lauren Bacall. In Broadley's obituary in The Times newspaper, Margaret is mentioned: "She joined BBC TV and went on to produce some of the corporation's finest arts and music documentaries in the 1960s and 1970s, introducing numerous writers and artists to television for the first time. Among them were Lawrence Durrell, with whom she developed a special friendship, John Betjeman, who likewise became a close friend, Robert Graves, and Graham Sutherland". This "special relationship" was likely a love affair with Durrell. She did an interview for the BBC "Intimations: Lawrence Durrell. Strong opinions from the author of The Alexandria Quartet" broadcast in 1965, probably at the beginning of their affair. A lovely association copy. Codice articolo 136288

"The Alexandria Quartet is a tetralogy of novels by British writer Lawrence Durrell, published between 1957 and 1960. A critical and commercial success, the books present four perspectives on a single set of events and characters in Alexandria, Egypt, before and during World War II. As Durrell explains in his preface to Balthazar, the four novels are an exploration of relativity and the notions of continuum and subject-object relation, with modern love as the subject. The Quartet offers the same sequence of events through several points of view, allowing individual perspectives to change over time. Codice articolo 2263961
