Editore: Alfred A. Knopf, New York (1939)
Quantità: 1
Da: Raptis Rare Books, ABAA/ ILAB (Palm Beach, FL, U.S.A.)
Descrizione: Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1939. First American edition of last book written and published in Sigmund Freud's lifetime. Presentation copy, inscribed on the front free endpaper, "To dear Poppy from Uncle Sigm. London 1939." The eldest daughter of Freud's elder brother, Philipp, Pauline "Poppy" Freud was born in 1873 when Sigmund was seventeen years old. Freud visited Pauline and her parents in Manchester, England periodically throughout her childhood and maintained correspondence with Pauline well into her adulthood, visiting her and her husband, Frederick Oswald Hartwig, in London in 1939. Near fine in a very good dust jacket with some wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Freud association copies of this magnitude seldom enter the marketplace. Moses and Monotheism is an in depth examination of the characteristics of monotheistic religion as it developed within both the Jewish and Christian faiths. Freud concludes that the legendary figure of Moses was, in fact, and Egyptian and so brought what would become Judaism to Israel from his native country of Egypt. The book was met with great controversy and "delivered a shock to many of his admirers", according to his contemporary Joseph Campbell. Philosopher Mikkel Borch-Jacobsen wrote that in the book Freud applied to history "the same method of interpretation that he used in the privacy of his office to 'reconstruct' his patients' forgotten and repressed memories.". Condizione sovraccoperta: G-VG. 1st English ed. 223; narrow, faint brown water-stain line down outer edges from half-title to p.18, this is quite tolerable however, 1939-dated sig.above 11 short lines of pencilled notes - easily eraseable but perhaps of some interest so I have left them, covers clean, tight & unmarked, slight loss of surface sheen down front fore-edge only visible at and angle, unclipped original jacket in protective sleeve as acquired has 1/1.5x6 cm chip top back, chipe top spine affecting 'M' of 'Moses', rubbing to fore-edge and front hinge and faint waterstain marks top and bottom outer front edge (centre black as taken up by illustration). Now quite scarce especially with jacket in any condition. Freud's remarkable, controversial and ingenious final major work claiming Moses was an Egyptian and Judaic monotheism originated in the short monotheism eisode in Egyptian history. In some respects what would once have been called 'a rattling good yarn' regardless of whether you believe it or not. Descrizione: Hogarth Press London 1974, 1974. corrected edition hardback with dust jacket Nice copy octavo vii + 154pp., bibliog., index, Number 33 in the International Psycho-Analytical Library. 'Freud's speculations on various aspects of religion, on the basis of which he explains certain characteristics of the Jewish people in their relations with the Christians. From an intensive study of Moses legend, Freud comes to the startling conclusion that Moses himself was an Egyptian who brought from his native country the religion he gave to the Jews. He accepts the hypothesis that Moses was murdered in the wilderness, but that his memory was cherished by the people and that his religious doctrine ultimately triumphed.'
