Gustave Flaubert. » Les dernières lettres du mot amitié et du nom de Flaubert ont été rognées par le relieur. Les envois autographes de Flaubert sont fort rares sur Madame Bovary (cf. Clouzot). Alfred Guérard fut avec Gustave Flaubert le plus proche ami de Louis Bouilhet. Ce grand industriel rouennais était également un ami des arts et un véritable mécène pour Bouilhet qui lui dédia plusieurs ouvrages. Flaubert, comme en témoigne sa correspondance, ne manquait pas de l'inviter à ses dîners littéraires ou artistiques. Il sera notamment en 1863 l'un des très rares auditeurs du Château des c urs, féerie avortée qui ne connut que cette « lecture solennelle devant un aréopage » que Flaubert sélectionne parmi ses amis de la haute société : « Nous avons voulu avoir un public de bourgeois pour juger de l'effet naïf de l' uvre » (voir les lettres à sa nièce Caroline de décembre 1863). A very rare autograph inscription signed by Gustave Flaubert to Alfred Guérard, a close friend of Louis Bouilhet, who is the dedicatee of the work: "à Alf. Guérard souvenir d'amitié. Gustave Flaubert" [to Alf. Guérard, a friendly souvenir]. The final letters of the word "amitié" and Flaubert's name shaved by the binder. Autograph inscriptions by Flaubert are very rare on copies of Madame Bovary (cf. Clouzot). Alfred Guérard was, with Gustave Flaubert, one of the closest friends of Louis Bouilhet, and an important industrialist in Rouen, who was also a friend of the arts and a true patron of Bouilhet, who had dedicated several works to him. Flaubert, as his correspondence also tells us, always invited him to his literary or artistic dinners. He was, most notably, one of the very few people to hear, in 1863, the abortive féerie, the Château des c urs, which only got as far as a "solemn reading before a learned council" that Flaubert assembled from among his society friends. "We wanted to have a bourgeois audience to judge the naive effect of the work" (see his letters to his niece Caroline in December 1863). Contemporary binding, red quarter-chagrin, over paper-covered boards, and marbled endpapers, spine with gilt bands and stamped initials "A.S." at the foot. This copy bound without the covers as was the contemporary practice, and without publisher s advertisements. A small tear, without loss, in the upper gutter on page 303, and page 412 with a spot, and small nearly unnoticeable traces of offsetting on the preliminary endpapers. Board edges and one or two corners slightly rubbed, but an otherwise lovely and solid copy in its original state. First issue with the following points, dedication to Senart , rather than "Senard" (the attorney, Antoine-Marie-Jules Sénard, who successfully defended Flaubert against charges of moral depravity and blasphemy). With the final line of the dedication reading "ni de votre dévouement" which would be replaced in later printings with "et de votre dévouement". Codice articolo 371

Ferroud, 1905. in-4, [3] ff. n. ch., IV-334 pp., avec 20 planches hors texte (dont un frontispice), et 7 vignettes en-tête ou culs-de-lampe, le tout en deux états, maroquin cerise, dos à nerfs orné de filets dorés et de caissons mosaïqués de maroquin vert, encadrement de simple filet doré et de septuple filet mosaïqué sur les plats, double filet doré sur les coupes, tranches dorées, encadrement de simple filet doré et quadruple filet mosaïqué sur les contreplats, couverture et dos conservés, le tout dans emboîtage cartonné (H. Blanchetière). Un des 200 exemplaires sur Japon, deuxième grand papier, numérotés à la main (137/200), avec les illustrations en double état. Magnifique édition illustrée, une des plus luxueuses parmi les 27 qui s'étagent de 1885 à 1950 : le peintre et illustrateur Alfred-Paul-Marie Desbassayns de Richemont (1857-1911) a reconstitué minutieusement les lieux, les éléments du décor et les caractéristiques des personnages du roman. Cf. Gallice (Bruno) : Rémanence de Madame Bovary dans l'édition illustrée (2014). Très bel exemplaire dans une luxueuse reliure de Blanchetière. Relié avec : un Billet autographe signé de Flaubert sur papier bleu (ductus du prénom un peu abrégé par rapport aux exempalires ordinaires), non daté précisément, donnant rendez-vous un lundi à un destinataire inconnu.
