Editore: New York: Alfred A. Knopf, September 1923 (1923)
Quantità: 1
Da: Peter Harrington. ABA/ ILAB. (London, Regno Unito)
Descrizione: New York: Alfred A. Knopf, September 1923, 1923. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles and design gilt to front board. Spine tanned and titles dulled as often, ends and corners rubbed, cloth somewhat marked to sides, gilt titles a little rubbed at front board, spine rolled, superficial split starting from top edge of front endpapers but nonetheless sound, pages clean, a good copy overall. 12 illustrations after drawings by the author. First edition, first printing, a very scarce presentation copy inscribed by Gibran in the year of publication "To Claire Ross, with kindest thoughts from Kahlil Gibran, November 1923". Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931) is one of a select group of literary geniuses whose greatest works were written in a language other than that of their birth. Born in the Lebanon, Gibran emigrated to the US and having published several works in Arabic he produced The Prophet, his masterpiece, in English. It was this collection of inspirational essays, first printed in September 1923, that established his world-wide reputation. Never out of print, translated into over 40 languages, and with sales of over 100 million copies, The Prophet is responsible for Gibran's ranking as the third best-selling poet of all time, behind Shakespeare and Lao-Tzu. Signed or inscribed copies of the first printing of The Prophet are very scarce indeed; we can trace only one appearing in auction records, and that merely signed. Codice articolo 134139

Descrizione: Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1923. First edition, early printing of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth, with illustrations by the author. Association copy, lengthily inscribed by Kahlil Gibran on the title page, "This is for Elenor Fisch, who lives in the world of beautiful understanding. Kahlil Gibran, 1926." From the library of D. Rajagopal with his library stamp to the front pastedown. Rajagopal was the lifelong friend and editor of Indian philosopher Jiddu Krishnamurti, the leader of the Theosophy movement in the early 20th century, and one of its most famous figures. In his teachings, Krishnamurti stressed the necessity for a revolution of human consciousness, which could only occur with radical religious, political, and social change. Near fine in a very good dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Rare and desirable signed and with noted provenance. The Prophet is a collection of poetic essays that are philosophical, spiritual, and, above all, inspirational. Gibran's musings are divided into twenty-eight chapters covering such sprawling topics as love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, housing, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. It has been translated into well over 40 languages. By 2012, it had sold more than nine million copies in its American edition alone since its original publication in 1923. Codice articolo 96203

The box is quite worn with 10 short pieces of tape holding the back of the box in place. The Prophet is a book of 26 prose poetry fables written in English by the Lebanese-American artist, philosopher and writer Kahlil Gibran. It was originally published in 1923 by Alfred A. Knopf. It is Gibran's best known work. The Prophet has been translated into over 40 different languages and has never been out of print. The prophet, Almustafa, has lived in the foreign city of Orphalese for 12 years and is about to board a ship which will carry him home. He is stopped by a group of people, with whom he discusses topics such as life and the human condition. The book is divided into chapters dealing with love, marriage, children, giving, eating and drinking, work, joy and sorrow, houses, clothes, buying and selling, crime and punishment, laws, freedom, reason and passion, pain, self-knowledge, teaching, friendship, talking, time, good and evil, prayer, pleasure, beauty, religion, and death. Though born a Maronite, he was influenced not only by his own religion but also by Islam, and especially by the mysticism of the Sufis. His knowledge of Lebanon's bloody history, with its destructive factional struggles, strengthened his belief in the fundamental unity of religions, which his parents exemplified by welcoming people of various religions in their home. Connections and parallels have also been made to William Blake's work, as well as the theological ideas of Walt Whitman and in Ralph Waldo Emerson such as reincarnation and the Over-soul. Themes of influence in his work were Islamic/Arabic art, European Classicism (particularly Leonardo Da Vinci) andRomanticism (Blake and Auguste Rodin), the pre-Raphelite Brotherhood, and more modern symbolism and surrealism. Gibran followed The Prophet with The Garden of The Prophet, which was published posthumously in 1933. The Garden of the Prophet narrates Almustafa's discussions with nine disciples following Almustafa's return after an intervening absence. (Wikipedia) Later printing with a 1926 title page date and the 1923 copyright date. Codice articolo 572
