Descrizione: Reynal & Hitchcock (1943), New York, 1943. Hardcover. Antoine de Saint-Exupery (illustratore). First Edition. This is copy #348 of 525 numbered copies SIGNED by the author on the tipped-in limitation page. The American edition appeared before the French or English editions and is essentially the only way to obtain a signed edition of this book as the author was assigned to fly with the French Free Air Force shortly before publication and went missing about a year later while on a mission. This special issue of one of the most beloved books of the twentieth century is, consequently, one of the most desired limited editions and does not come often upon the marketplace. The dustwrapper on this copy was likely supplied from the trade edition as it is not numbered on the spine. THE LITTLE PRINCE is both the most-read and most-translated book in the French language and was voted the best book of the 20th century in France. This copy is clean and bright with virtually no wear but for some soiling to the endpapers and minor bumps to the corners. About Fine in a close to Fine dustwrapper with a couple of small stains to the spine. Codice articolo 019599

A presentable, collectible copy of this scarce French edition of Saint-Exupéry's children's classic. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, officially Antoine Marie Jean-Baptiste Roger, comte de Saint Exupéry 1900 1944 was a French aristocrat, writer, poet, and pioneering aviator. He became a laureate of several of France's highest literary awards and also won the U.S. National Book Award. He is best remembered for his novella The Little Prince (Le Petit Prince) and for his lyrical aviation writings, including Wind, Sand and Stars and Night Flight. Saint-Exupéry was a successful commercial pilot before World War II, working airmail routes in Europe, Africa and South America. At the outbreak of war, he joined the French Air Force (Armée de l'Air), flying reconnaissance missions until France's armistice with Germany in 1940. After being demobilised from the French Air Force, he travelled to the United States to persuade its government to enter the war against Nazi Germany. Following a 27-month hiatus in North America, during which he wrote three of his most important works, he joined the Free French Air Force in North Africa, although he was far past the maximum age for such pilots and in declining health. He disappeared over the Mediterranean on his last assigned reconnaissance mission in July 1944, and is believed to have died at that time. (Wikipedia) Stated Second Printing on the copyright page. Descrizione: New York: Harcourt , Brace & World. [1943] 1960, Per FIRSTS Magazine, October 2003, 2003. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 5th or later Edition. Pictorial DJ has clipped front inside flap, top and bottom; dust soiled; small chips on corners and spine edges; closed tear on back top spine edge. Has the Following points with regard to Katherine Woods Translation: THE SHEEP TEST (p. 18): Katherine Woods made one very obvious mistake in her English translation. The error occurs in Chapter 4, in the sentence: Il était une fois un petit prince qui habitait une planète à peine plus grande que lui, et qui avait besoin d'un ami. The correct translation is (to use Irene Testot-Ferry's translation): 'Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planet scarcely bigger than himself and who had need of a friend'. Katherine Woods translated this as 'Once upon a time there was a little prince who lived on a planet that was scarcely any bigger than himself, and who had need of a sheep.' To test if a translation is based on Katherine Woods' version, one rule of thumb is to check if it uses 'sheep' instead of 'friend'. THE TRUE STORIES TEST (p. 7): Another, less clear-cut test is found in Chapter 1, where the narrator refers to a book, Histoires Vécues. Vécu is the past participle of vivre 'to live', so this literally means 'Lived Stories', that is, stories that have actually been undergone or experienced. In more idiomatic English, this can be translated as 'Real-life Stories'. Irene Testot-Ferry translates it as 'True Stories'. Katherine Woods translates this book title as 'True Stories from Nature'. Since there's no reference to nature in the original French, it stands to reason that a Chinese translation including a word equivalent to 'nature' is based on Woods' English version. THE LOOK TEST (p. 79): At Chapter 25, there's a discussion about people not finding what they are 'looking for'. The little prince says: Mais les yeux sont aveugles. Il faut chercher avec le c ur. This is translated by Woods as: 'But the eyes are blind. One must look with the heart'. Codice articolo 469
