Descrizione: American Publishing Company, Hartford, Connecticut, 1872. First edition, first state of Twain's first semi-autobiographical work of travel literature, essentially a prequel to The Innocents Abroad, with the word "his" on line 21 and the advert present on page 592 (BAL 3337). Octavo, bound in the original publishers three quarters morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers, engraved frontispiece with tissue guard, fully illustrated by eminent artists. In near fine condition. Dedicated to Twain's mining companion Calvin H. Higbie, Roughing It follows the travels of young Mark Twain through the Wild West during the years 1861-1867. After a brief stint as a Confederate cavalry militiaman, Twain joined his brother Orion on a stagecoach journey west. The book also chronicles many of Twain's other early adventures including a visit to Salt Lake City, gold and silver prospecting, real-estate speculation, a journey to Hawaii, and his beginnings as a writer. Descrizione: American Publishing Co, Hartford, 7872. Original Cloth Binding. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. 591 pages with 6 tipped in plates and numerous figures. Octavo (9" x 6"). Issued in full cloth with pictorial spine and cover in gilt and blind stamped cover. (BAL 3326) First edition, first state. The print run for the first edition is uncertain, but the book was published in February 1872 and by month's end 10,855 copies had been bound. By May 1, according to a royalty statement, 37,701 copies had been sold, of which 22,43 were in cloth; 13, 952 in sheep and in cloth with gilt edges; 1,176 in three-quarter morocco; and 30 in "special" bindings which included full morocco. By 1879, the proportions were as follows: 96,083 copies sold. Two surviving copies are recorded in the full morocco binding, one of which Twain presented to his wife with her name stamped in gilt on the front cover. The other full morocco copy was identically stamped, except for having no name on the cover. BAL distinguishes between the first and second states by the presence of two words on page 242 (first state) or their absence (second state). But it isn't that simple. Copies are found with just one word present (or one word absent, if you are a pessimist.) And similar damage to the plates has been noted on the following pages: xi.1 (M in My is perfect) as in this copy; 19.1 (y is perfect) as in this copy; and 123.6 up (death! which was corrected from death.) as this copy. All of these texts are damaged at some point during the printings(s), and all, including the one on page 242, are found in endless random combinations. At some point, two words were altered: at page 156.2 up "thirteenth" was corrected to "sixteenth" - this copy has the uncorrected "thirteenth" -and on page 330.16 up "Eastern" was corrected to "eastern" - this copy has the uncorrected listing. These changes could distinguish between two printings, but may only distinguish between two later printings. The states of the plates can be guessed at, but if multiple plates were used or mixing of sheets took place (as is clear from surviving copies) they should be viewed with caution. Condition: Professionally re-backed; page ends renewed, corners bumped, former owner's name on front end paper dated March 27, 1872. Over all a very good copy. Codice articolo L0070

Descrizione: American Publishing Company, Hartford Conn, 1872. Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. Eminent Artists (illustratore). Mark Twain's hilarious exaggerated accounts of his travels through the West. He insults and pokes fun of everyone, including himself. And he invents some great tales and adventures. This is one of my favorite books, and I'd highly recommend reading it. Plus, there's some American history in here, that's true, that people are trying to erase (for example, The Mountain Meadows Massacre). This is the first American edition, in the slightly more expensive (when new), and more rare, binding with leather spine and corners; the binding is the original to the book. Now if you're a collector, here's the typical points (BAL 3337). Page 242 has all the words. There's an ad on 592. Page 156 has capital T and "thirteenth". Page 330, "Eastern". The wear on this book is consistent of one that's been well read but responsibly kept. It's not falling apart, but it's got thumbing throughout, toning, edge chips/tears, etc. (see condition notes below). Physical Attributes - Measures approx. 22 x 14.5 x 4 cm. Leather spine and corners. Decorative paper covers hardcover boards. Spine has six compartments, four with a blind tooled clover in the center, and two with the title, author and "Illustrated" in gilt. Page edges were marbled (now faded). Pages - flyleaf, (2), 2 inserted frontis plates, xviii, 19-592, (1), flyleaf. I count six inserted non-paginated plates (plus the previously noted frontis plates). Condition - See pictures. Vintage patina. Rubbing to all edges and joints. Front joint appears a little dry with more crazing than rear. Rubbing marks to boards. Marbled page edges are faded. Front inner hinge cracked. Flyleaf and 1st unpaginated blank endpaper have some damage at top half of gutter. Numerous bookseller notes on 1st blank endpaper, like "1st edition", "Rare", etc. Name and city at top of 2nd blank unpaginated endpaper. Frontis plates have a dark spot at fore-edge where thumb would touch them. Title page has spot at bottom and some thumbing. Some thumbing, soiling and toning throughout. Occasional fox spots common to paper from this era. Occasional fox spot, especially where thumb/fingers turn the page. Occasional edge chip/tear, no text affected. 2" tear in middle of 159/160, all paper present. Top corner of pages bumped from 225 to 325. 4" tear at top of 463/464, all text present. 1125 grams.
