Descrizione: New Directions, 1947. WILLIAMS, Tennessee. A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE. NY: New Directions, [1947]. Tall 8vo., pictorial purple boards in dust jacket. First Edition. Signed by Williams and actress Jessica Tandy on the front endpaper. Only a mere 5,080 copies were printed. One of the most difficult, if not the most difficult and desirable, books to obtain in the Williams canon. Tandy portrayed Blanche DuBois in the original Broadway production, also starring Marlon Brando, Kim Hinter and Karl Malden. Tandy garnered four Tony awards for her performance. Unquestionably one of the great masterpieces of modern American drama and the first play to win Williams a Pulitzer Prize. Near fine (few very tiny dings to upper & lower covers, little tanning to endpapers; text clean & tight); minor soil & few very short tears (little fading spine & small, light stain front cover; $2.75 price is present on the front flap) d/j. A nice copy!!. Codice articolo 9097

Descrizione: New Directions, New York, 1947. Condizione: about Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Near Fine. First edition. A sharp copy of this theater and film highspot. A just about Fine copy of the book with minor discoloration to the spine ends. In a lovely, Near Fine dust jacket with a little nick at the top of the rear panel, minor creasing at the crown and some offsetting on the front flap. One short tear on the rear panel reinforced on the blank verso with tape. But a copy that displays almost none of the ubiquitous toning and fading so often seen and, therefore, is quite unusual. Tennessee Williams' 1947 masterpiece, a Pulitzer Prize winning work that remains one of the great plays of the American theatre. A Streetcar Named Desire follows Blanche DuBois as she moves to New Orleans to live with her sister, Stella, and Stella's husband Stanley. Like many of Williams' plays, some of the characters are thought to be inspired by members of Williams' own family. A Streetcar Named Desire originally premiered on Broadway on December 3rd 1949, starring Marlon Brando and Jessica Tandy and directed by Eliza Kazan. The London production involved such theatrical luminaries as Vivian Leigh and Laurence Olivier. Of course, the play would be adapted in a classic film version in 1951, which would win four Academy Awards including Best Actress, and was chosen as the Library of Congress as 'culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.' "But Mr. Williams is entitled to his own independence. For he has not forgotten that human beings are the basic subject of art. Out of poetic imagination and ordinary compassion he has spun a poignant and luminous story" (Contemporary New York Times review). about Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. Codice articolo 1732

Descrizione: New Directions, (NY), 1947. First edition. This is Williams's most famous play, which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama the year it was published. Legend has it that the audience applauded for half an hour after the debut performance ended. Williams also wrote the screenplay for the 1951 film, which garnered fame equal to (and perhaps surpassing) that of the original play with defining performances by Marlon Brando and Vivien Leigh. However, many of the more sensitive aspects of the play, such as Blanche's rape and references to homosexuality, were altered or omitted in order to comply with the film industry's censorship codes. A fine copy in printed boards with a tiny nick at the top of the spine and some light rubbing. There is no fading to the spine of the book. The dust wrapper is slightly faded on the spine and has several short, closed tears, particularly on front flap fold, else a fine example of a book that is notoriously difficult to find in such a state.
