Libro Copia autografata
Reprint, stapled. Condizione: Gut. pp. 355-367. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Author Fantazzi's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: The certamen magnum between Corydon and Thyrsis has often been neglected in deference to the more engagé compositions of the Eclogues, such as 1, 4, 6, and 10. For some, however, it is a very important piece, central to the understanding of Virgil's pastoral poetry. Ettore Paratore, the eminent cattedratico of Latin literature at the University of Rome, considers the poem to be the acid test for the comprehension of the Bucolics: "la capacità di comprendere e gustare l'ecloga VII è il banco di prova per un vero intenditore della poesia delle Bucoliche." North of the Alps another authoritative connoisseur of Augustan poetry, Viktor Pöschl of Heidelberg, paired the First and the Seventh Eclogues, "ein ernstes und ein heiteres Gedicht," as essential readings for the understanding of the Eclogues. Offprint. Condizione: Gut. pp. 231-248. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication. - Author's name handwritten on cover, otherwise very good and clean. - From the text: In a sort of envoi to his pipe, 'A la sampogna', which he added to his last revision of the Arcadia, the poet Sannazaro bids farewell to his sylvan Muse. It is a very desolate scene: Le nostre Muse sono estinte; secchi sono i nostri lauri; minato è il nostro Parnaso; le selve son tutte mutole; le valle e i monti per doglia son divenuti sordi. - He had earlier made some vague vaticinations about a new direction in his poetry in an elegy to his beloved Cassandra Marchese: Mox maiora vocant me numina scilicet alti Incessele animum sacra verenda Dei (Elegiae, III, 2, 45-46), - and adumbrates the theme of the work: Nuncius aetheriis ut venerit aliger astris Dona ferens castae Virginis in gremium (vv. 49-50). - Instrumental in converting the poet to a celebration of divine subjects was the famous preacher and mystic, Giles of Viterbo. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Estratto. Condizione: Gut. pp. 173-187. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With author's dedication to W. Haase. - Minimally bumped, else very good and clean. - From the text: In the domain of classical studies, in the English-speaking world at least, the title of W.F. Jackson Knight's book, Roman Vergil, has come to symbolize the sublime, vatic utterance of the most famous singer of Rome's greatness. No one would wish to deny this higher calling to the poet of the Aeneid. Servius says somewhere that all of Virgil is full of wisdom. The same cannot be truly said of Ovid, as he would be the first to acknowledge. His verse does not possess the emotional force, the ethereal Stimmung of his glorious predecessor. One would not call him Roman in the sense of official, imperial, august and Augustan Rome. Yet there is a sense in which Ovid shows a true attachment to Rome, to its ancient religious traditions and beliefs, and a sympathy for those simple folk who unfeignedly manifested their devotion to the gods . We must strip away the mask of this sophisticated poseur, discover the underlying tone of his words. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.

Cream dust jacket with gold medallion to front cover, virtually as new, still in publisher's shrink wrap. Many of the letters in this volume, which covers the period August 1530 to March 1531, reflect Erasmus' anxieties over events at the Diet of Augsburg (June-November 1530) , at which the first of many attempts to achieve a negotiated settlement of the religious division in Germany came to a rancorous conclusion, thus fostering the fear that religious controversy would eventually lead to war. His other chief concerns were the continued attacks on him by Catholic critics who regarded him as a clandestine Lutheran, and the insistence of many evangelical reformers that he was their spiritual father. The literary output of the period covered includes major works aimed at members of both groups. ; Collected Works Of Erasmus; Vol. 17; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 416 pages.

Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. First Edition. Xxi, 422 pp. Table of correspondents, works cited, short-title forms, index. Map, b/w illustrations. Large octavo. Cream dust jacket with bronze medallion is clean and intact, bit of minor shelf wear. Book itself is clean and unmarked, slight bit of storage bending on a few pages, otherwise a very nice copy. In English except on letter from Johannes Dantiscus to Erasmus in Latin, previously unpublished. ".covers the period from 1 April 1531 to 30 March 1532. The most persistent theme in the letters is the fear, to which Erasmus had long been prey, that the religious strife in Germany and Switzerland would eventually lead to armed conflict. His Catholic and Evangelical critics continued to annoy him. In June 1531 Erasmus published his final apologia against Alberto Pio, who had accused him of being the source of the Lutheran heresy. Though Erasmus' public controversy with the Strasbourg theologians had come to an end in 1530, he wrote a long letter to Martin Bucer emphasizing his doctrinal differences with the Strasbourgers and his low estimate of their moral character. Erasmus' financial affairs also figure prominently in the letters between him and his friend, the banker Erasmus Schets. The letters between them are testimony to his impatience with people who owed him money, his frequent inability to understand the details of his own finances, and his quickness to assume that people he trusted were cheating him. ; Collected Works of Erasmus; Vol. 18; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 448 pages.

'Brill?s Encyclopedia of the Neo-Latin World is an essential reference work for anyone interested in discovering how the Latin language continued to be an important medium for intellectual treatises, creative writing, and cultural transmission throughout Europe and beyond in the centuries since Petrarch. Sixty-six large survey articles offer fresh perspectives on a wide range of topics, including conversational Latin, women?s education, and Latin law. More than twice as many shorter entries focus on diverse subjects such as major writers, Latin literature written in various countries, centers of printing and publishing, and the pioneering work done by modern scholars in what was then the emerging field of Neo-Latin Studies. The encyclopedia continues the Neo-Latin tradition of international collaboration, scholarship, and publishing.' (ANNE-MARIE LEWIS, York University, Canada. President, American Association for Neo-Latin Studies). Condition: New.
