Professor Richard John is a scholar of Peterhouse, Cambridge, and a former fellow of Merton College, Oxford, where he taught Medieval and Renaissance Italian history. In 1995 he was appointed Director of The Prince of Wales s Institute of Architecture, London. He has been a faculty member at the University of Miami since 1999 and served as the Harrison Design Scholar at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2007-08. His books include Thomas Gordon Smith and the Rebirth of Classical Architecture (London, 2001) and John Simpson: The Queen's Gallery Buckingham Palace and Other Works (London, 2002). He is the Editor of The Classicist, the award-winning, peer-reviewed journal of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Classical America.

Turning to traditional design in the early 1970s, when it was unfashionable, Adam was granted a scholarship at the British School at Rome.
