Colin Rowe gilt als der Nestor der Architekturtheorie unserer Zeit. Als Lehrender hat er die gesamte Architektur-Didaktik und damit zwei ganze Generationen von Architekten geprägt. Seine Bücher - wie etwa "Transparenz" und "Collage City" (beide ebenfalls bei Birkhäuser lieferbar) - sind heute zu Grundlagentexten der architektonischen Lehre geworden. Rowes berühmter Aufsatz "Die Mathematik der idealen Villa" erschien zuerst 1947, als der Kritiker erst 27 Jahre alt war. Diese Schrift, von Le Corbusier als "une étude extrêmement importante" gepriesen, wurde seitdem in viele Sprachen übersetzt und liegt hier nun zum erstenmal auf deutsch vor. Ergänzend dazu hat Rowe für diesen Band weitere Essays zu Architektur und Städtebau ausgewählt. Aus der Perspektive des humanistisch gebildeten Generalisten geschrieben, sind diese Aufsätze besonders wegen ihrer zahlreichen Querverbindungen zur Kunst, Literatur und Geschichte eine ebenso geistreiche wie vergnügliche Lektüre.
